....Moorhty K Uppaluri, general manager, developer and platform evangelism indicated that the company spends around $ 9.5 billion in a year in specifically for research and development. He said that the Microsoft was one of the few companies that maintained its R&D spending even at the time of economic slowdown. Mr. Moorhty was speaking on the sidelines of Tech. Ed.

He (Uppaluri) did not disclose details about where the investment would go specifically and how much of that would be invested in the Microsoft India Development India Centre but only said that India is a 'strategic centre for the company' and the investment is likely to go up.

"In India, we are roughly around 2 million developers, where some 1.3 million are IT professionals and the remaining are from student and research community," said Moorthy while adding the number of developers in India were growing at by 16 -18 per cent against 3-4 per cent in the US. He said with the trend India will make up the largest number of developers for the company.

Detailing the company strategy he said that all consumers' access television, computer monitor and mobile screens and the company is focusing on all three. The dynamic and usage differs significantly in different countries.

The company invested considerable amounts in Visual Studio 2010 which can be used by developers to create and deploy software for various devices.

........

Go figure - Why does Gates do this when the US is his home country? We are truly handing the keys to the country to China and India - and it may be too late to get them back.

6. Microsoft is but one - Here is a report on 400 new jobs in India for Yahoo from them.....
Microsoft to Employ Over 400 Yahoo Workers in India
Submitted by Sarika Valecha on Thu, 04/01/2010 - 15:05

http://www.stockwatch.in/microsoft-employ-over-400-yahoo-workers-india-25185

Reports have revealed that Microsoft will be offering jobs to as many as 400 of Yahoo's software professionals, most of who are working on search technology, in order to try and boost the search-domain collaboration that the two technology majors had announced sometime back.

About 50% of these employees will be coming in from Yahoo's 2,000-worker strong Bangalore research centre, as has been shared by a Senior Yahoo Executive. An official announcement about the same is expected to come from Microsoft during this week.

"Two hundred of our best-of-breed talent involved in search infrastructure technology will be offered options with Microsoft. This will happen over the next one year and shows the maturity level of our local R&D centre", said Yahoo India R&D's chief Shouvick Mukherjee.

.........

While cutting jobs in US because $4.17 BILLION in 3 months wasn't enough money:

Microsoft to cut up to 5,000 jobs (over 18 months)
Thursday, 22 January 2009

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/7845237.stm

Microsoft has said it will cut up to 5,000 jobs over the next 18 months, including 1,400 immediately.

The firm also reported a net profit of $4.17bn (£3bn) for the three months to 31 December, down 11% on last year and less than analysts' expectations.

Microsoft added it was "no longer able" to give a profit and revenue outlook for the fiscal year amid current volatile market conditions.

......

How much is enough? How many lives will be changed from this and how will it and has it effected the US?

11. misleading title
Edited on Thu Apr-15-10 01:40 AM by idlisambar
For one, the $9.5 billion figure is total R&D worldwide, only a sliver of that is conducted in India. Second, the "2 million" figure quoted is for the number of developers in India, not the number of Microsoft developers in India (a few thousand at most).

13. Can you confirm your stats with links?
I can't seem to find anything to support what you've stated. Especially regarding the "a few thousand at most."

Thanks in advance!

15. sure, here you go
http://www.microsoft.com/india/msidc/

The Microsoft® India Development Center (MSIDC) is innovating and incubating technologies and products which impact millions of Microsoft customers worldwide. Starting with two products and 20 employees in 1998, MSIDC has grown over the last 10 years to 1500 plus employees.

.......................

There is a Research lab in Bangalore that employs 50-100 researchers, and they are adding a smaller development center in Bangalore(http://www.expresscomputeronline.com/20100419/news11.shtml), but the Hyderabad campus is the primary Microsoft outpost in India. Around 2000 is a reasonable count of the software engineers/researchers employed by Microsoft in India.

16. I don't buy those numbers....
Here's an article from 2005 (I know for a fact the number employed in India has grown since then) This was found on a 5 second search...I can only fathom what I'd find if I had more time at the moment.

Microsoft to add 3,000 employees in India

December 07, 2005

Microsoft is planning to increase its ranks in India by 3,000 employees over the next three to four years, a company spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday.

The announcement was made by Microsoft chairman Bill Gates at an Indian industry forum earlier in the day in Delhi. Microsoft currently has 4,000 staff in India, and plans to increase that figure to 7,000 over the next three to four years,

Being in Redmond, I assume you are a M$ employee.

17. yeah, that article seems roughly accurate
but the number includes sales/marketing, data entry, support engineers, vendors (engineers, receptionists, etc. who work for some other firm but are hired by Microsoft on a contract basis), etc. so there is no inconsistency -- around 2000 "developers" is a good approximation. If you widen the net to total employees and count vendors too, then you get a few thousand more, but that doesn't affect my original point was that it is nowhere in the neighborhood of the "2 million" suggested in the title -- that's actually more than 20 times greater than Microsoft's total employee count.

That being said, I don't take issue with with the spirit of your original post, I just want to make sure the numbers in people's minds are grounded in reality.
