Opinion If the human rights debacle at Abu Ghraib teaches us anything - besides the routinely-forgotten lesson that people with guns and uniforms tend to go sadistic and feral unless observed openly and controlled rigidly - it teaches us that the global battle against terrorism is being waged by incompetents and fools.

2. Moral fiber

Until recently, the Conservatives of this nation had complained loudly about the declining moral behavior of this nation. Criticisms abounded from the Right against Clinton's loss of moral authority over a sex act. Now, all we hear are muted tones about the entire nation's loss of moral authority from that same sector when the head of government is one of their own. Instead of steadfastness to the adherence of principle, we hear cries of moral relativism (though they do not call it by its proper name) to blunt the damage that has been done. The introduction of relativism moves the view of this nation from the "good" in "good vs evil" to the "lesser" in "lesser of two evils". Where are the cries of outrage against this degrading of what we stood for. The once boisterous din is now only deafening silence.
To deflect blame, the finger is being pointed in the direction of poor discipline, poor training, and poor supervision (assuming there was poor supervision and not direction from above). No one looks toward where the real blame lays which at the top, not because the buck stops there as expressed by Truman; but, because the person in charge promotes an attitude of "the end justifies the means". At first, little deviations from principle become acceptable. Then, as the situation worsens, justifications are made for greater and greater deviations until the principles are ignored completely. Finally, the point of pretense has been crossed and that is where we are now.
We got here because a religious person is not a person of faith. While principles are expressed, there is not enough faith in the principles to uphold them; therefore, "the end justifies the means prevails". This raises the question of adherence to principles from a lesser source than that of God. After all, if a person cannot hold to religious principles set down by God; how can they be expected to hold to those addressed in the Constitution, even if inspired by the same God. They cannot as we can readily see as the deviation from principle continues. Sadly, the lack of faith does not just apply to Bush for all the apologists are deviating from principles as well.
It would seem that the immoral behavior once assigned to the Left is more prevalent in the Right. Such is the glass homes of the righteous.
