Not satisfied with U.S. history, some conservatives rewrite it

Is American history being changed?

By Steven Thomma | McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — The right is rewriting history.

The most ballyhooed effort is under way in Texas, where conservatives have pushed the state school board to rewrite guidelines, downplaying Thomas Jefferson in one high school course, playing up such conservatives as Phyllis Schlafly and the Heritage Foundation and challenging the idea that the Founding Fathers wanted to separate church and state.

The effort reaches far beyond one state, however.

In articles and speeches, on radio and TV, conservatives are working to redefine major turning points and influential figures in American history, often to slam liberals, promote Republicans and reinforce their positions in today's politics.

The Jamestown settlers? Socialists. Founding Father Alexander Hamilton? Ill-informed professors made up all that bunk about him advocating a strong central government.

Theodore Roosevelt? Another socialist. Franklin D. Roosevelt? Not only did he not end the Great Depression, he also created it.

Joe McCarthy? Liberals lied about him. He was a hero.

Some conservatives say it's a long-overdue swing of the pendulum after years of liberal efforts to define history on their terms in classrooms and in popular culture.

"We are adding balance," Texas school board member Don McLeroy said. "History has already been skewed. Academia is skewed too far to the left."

brainwashing the youth to fall in line and be good robotic disciples. The stuff authoritative countries are made of... I wish Americans would ALL wake up to what these people are trying to do... it is evil, ignorant and destructive. And reminds me of past times in 1930's Germany.

And it seems to me that they are using Orwell's ideas as a plan....Their fascism is just a step on the road.

Known for her generous heart, soft edge, warmth and kindness towards others. :sarcasm:

Joe McCarthy: A Patriot Who Saved The World From Really Great Movie Scripts, Actors, Directors, Mathematicians and Those in Other Professions for Several Years Due to Thoughtful Patience and Generosity of Spirit.

A quiet man, beloved for his tolerance for greater intelligence, and known for his enjoyment of many a sip of clear refreshing water.:toast:

7. That's because the TRUTH indeed has a LIBERAL bias!
NOBODY can escape that - LIBERAL ideas and reality is based on - well - FACTS - and REALITY - you know - the TRUTH - while conservatives have to resort to LIES and BELIEFS to bolster their point of view - of course they'd then logically be against any "history" that goes against their BELIEF of what happened - facts be damned!!!

8. Here's what I posted in the GD thread on the same topic
In the book section of Target, there was a book that was made up to look exactly like Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States.

My first reaction was, "Target is selling the Zinn book? Cool!"

Then I looked at it more closely. The title was A Patriot's History of the United States, and on the cover it said, "Recommended by Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh."

Blecch!

9. Wow. That's shameless. Luckily, teabaggers and their ilk
don't know the first thing about Howard Zinn, so they won't be influenced.
