Bin Laden has exceeded even his wildest dreams
Bin Laden has exceeded even his wildest dreams
Simon Jenkins

SOMEWHERE in a cave on the Afghan/Pakistan border, a haggard man with a long black beard chalks a list of scalps on the wall. He gives an occasional whoop of delight. Each day’s news fills his eyes with tears of joy. But this week has exceeded his wildest dreams. He has been toying with scalps he never thought to capture, those of the Prime Minister of Britain and the President of the United States. Could he really bring about their downfall?

The mountain hideout of Osama bin Laden must be Exhibit A in any history of the early 21st century. Its victims now range far wider than the twin towers and the Pentagon. They embrace the hated Saddam Hussein and his Baathist infidels, the Government of Spain, the Geneva Convention, the authority of the United Nations and the Editor of the Daily Mirror. They embrace habeas corpus in Britain and America, a British Cabinet minister and the Chairman of the BBC.

1. Well he won. He has made the world as scary as he wished.
We, the USA, has almost sunk to his level. We put women in prison until they tell us where their husbands, or fathers are, hit, beat, shame, and who knows what (some have died) . We have hit a new low so he must see that, if I do.And the world does not look safer to me. People are not being blown up every week but many times a day. So who won?

3. I don't know that OBL has won, his goals are far from achievement still.
But he's certainly given a good account of himself so far,
or had a run of superb luck, or maybe his opponents have
been so pathetically stupid that he just couldn't lose, or
maybe both.

6. Luck? Shit, he was just following bush's orders, wasn't he?

Nothing that this cabal has done convinces me that all of this wasn't MIHOP.

No one could be that stupid and wrongheaded by nature. If it all wasn't done on purpose, statistics have lost all meaning and the universe is disolving into chaos.

7. You are entitled to your opinion, but I disagree.
While OBL and the BFEE have had "relations" I don't think
OBL is a tool of the BFEE, and it seems simpler to me to assume
that he is more or less what he seems to be, as opposed to some
sort of double agent for the US government or whatever ...

5. Yeah, OBL himself has said he wants Bush to stay.
He knows a good straight man when he sees one. Getting
rid of Bush is obviously a loss for OBL too.
