Shelby put blanket hold on ALL NOMINEES (including Security nominees) more attacks on our democracy
by the Corporate Lobbyist party. What ARE we going to do with these irresponsible saboteurs of effective, responsive (to the needs of the PEOPLE - NOT CORPORATIONS), democratic government?

Another Day, Another Disappointing Political Ploy Obstructing Progress

Posted by Dan Pfeiffer on February 05, 2010 at 01:31 PM EST

Yesterday, just hours after the Senate voted 96-0 to confirm Martha Johnson as the Administrator of the GSA after a pointless 9-month delay, we learned that Sen. Richard Shelby from Alabama has placed a blanket hold on all nominees, including national security nominees, to use as leverage for some projects in his state. He's holding up 70 nominees, among them top intelligence officials at the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security. According to the National Journal, he’s holding them up until two defense contracts that would benefit interests in his state can be fast-tracked.

Let's be clear: Sen. Shelby is preventing qualified nominees who will help protect the American people from being confirmed. He’s not alone, though. This is just the latest example of this kind opposition for opposition’s sake that the President talked about earlier this week.. This strategy of obstruction is preventing qualified people from doing their jobs on behalf of the American people and it’s preventing real work from getting done in Washington. Every minute spent needlessly blocking noncontroversial nominees, many of whom go on to be confirmed by 70 or more votes or by voice vote (nine of the President’s nominees so far), is a minute not spent on the issues that matter to American families.

As I noted yesterday, this is true of the legislative process, too. The Senate cast more votes to break filibusters last year than in the entire 1950s and '60s combined, making it nearly impossible to come to agreement on key legislation.

1. And who is it we're fighting? Terrorists?
I dare say our number one enemy is the Republican Party!

They allowed this economic mess to happen. And now they're blocking nominees to critical positions in our government, including positions dealing with national security.

So, it really makes me wonder just how dangerous these "terrorists" we've been fighting are. After all, if they were determined to attack us, wouldn't the Republicans want these positions filled for national security reasons?

It seems to me the Republicans are placing Americans in greater danger in order to put their party's needs first.

What am I missing? Why is America not outraged over this? Could it be the lack of coverage of this issue in our self-serving corporate-owned media?

3. Al Kaeda can't compete with the GOP for damaging America. Who needs Al Kaeda when you've got the GOP

Think about it, the Repubican Deregulation Disaster, which lead into this current REPUBLICAN DYSTOPIA. This is costing America far more than what Al Kaeda has done to us. Who are the real enemies of American Democracy here?

thing for him to do. Offhand, I would call him a domestic terrorist and have him arrested as such.

7. not calling is timidity in my book.
They need their cages rattled daily. We hammer on Democrats without mercy. Shelby, et al need to know that they are seen. They have a staff who has to hear it, like it or not, they have to hear. When they hear it enough, then they can no longer ignore it. To silently seethe and rage does nothing. This at least lets them know they are being seen for what they are. of course, JMHO

8. Senator Sheby is blocking 70 nominees while demanding billions in earmarks
This sounds like when the banks held the US economy hostage and threatened to crash it unless they were given billions in bailout money.

The $40 billion project he is demanding action for is actually related to a bidding process in which a joint venture between Northrop Grumman and EADS is competing against Boeing for a contract to build a new aerial refueling tanker. The Northrop/EADS venture plans to build the tanker in Mobile, Alabama, if it wins, but is threatening to withdraw its bid altogether unless the Air Force makes the conditions of bidding more favorable to its needs.

Shelby is lobbying on behalf of a foreign corporation, against an American corporation in order to coerce payment of billions of dollars in earmarks to corporations that might do business in his home state.

Sounds like a whore to me, a whore to foreign corporate interests.

10. Shelby is lobbying for a foreign corporation against an American corp.?! Jesus fucking Christ!

"Shelby is lobbying on behalf of a foreign corporation, against an American corporation in order to coerce payment of billions of dollars in earmarks to corporations that might do business in his home state."

Does anybody have a problem Toyota they could give to Shebly. We could take up a collection and underwrite the gift.. and then hope we get lucky!

The fucking nerve of these sub-human, vermin is really impossible to comprehend. This is the piece of shit who didn't want to bail out Detroit automakers even thought letting GM and Chrysler fail would have taken us into the Great Depression.

He keeps looking to improvise economic explosive devices to kill our economy so he can say Obama and the Dems screwed up. Let the people pay for his perfidy... with a depression..

Like I say, who needs Al Kaida when you've got the GOP?

9. So, this would be
President Shelby? One man, a republican asshat no less, who is able to stall the real President and all of the elected Democrats in Congress? Fucking time for a revolution. This shit is just to unreal. Sure Obama can just "pencil" his appointments in when Congress is on a break and circumvent Shelby, but this is a short answer to long term staffing. Does Shelby fly small airplanes?
