Rumsfeld isn't solely to blame for failures | Everett WA HeraldNet
Calls for the head of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld miss the central point: President Bush is ultimately responsible for all that's gone wrong in Iraq.

It's hard to imagine how the war effort could have gone more badly. . . .

<snip>

Rumsfeld, to be sure, deserves much of the blame for all of this. So do others in the Pentagon and elsewhere in the administration. But the buck still stops at the president's desk, and this president has strongly and consistently led or supported the decisions that have resulted in this sorry state of affairs. . . .

<snip>

It's unbelievable that some supporters of the administration have taken to comparing the abuse of Iraqi prisoners to the heinous acts regularly perpetrated by Saddam Hussein, an effort to picture U.S. abuses as small. Such desperate comparisons don't say much about the United States' role as a leader of the free world.

The Bush administration's record in Iraq won't change with a single firing or resignation. The ultimate judges of the president's performance on this and other issues will be the American people. Their decision comes Nov. 2.

I don't know anything about this paper's editorials in the past, but it's good to know that pointing to The Naked Ape as the ultimate end of the food chain is making its way through the land, one newspaper at a time.
