... At a formal event at the National Gallery of Art, Lee and his men flanked the doors of an elevator that the president and first lady were to use. But it wouldn't open.

"Jackie said, 'Let's just take the stairs.' The president said, 'No, let's give it a minute.' They stood there a moment more and Jackie said, 'Let's go.' She turned and the president followed her," Lee said.

"But first he paused, looked right at me and said, 'Trust me, I make the big decisions.' "

Military protocol prevented him from laughing at the time, but he has been laughing ever since ...
