A Baby at a Philadelphia Eagles Game, Complete with Racism
Should one isolate and insulate one’s child from the world? I don’t believe so, but am well prepared for boorishness and racism that might come with bringing him along to a major sporting event. No snowballs at Santa, but my baby Jack got the offer of some watermelon. They must have been out of fried chicken and collard greens.

3. One dumb bastard
The guy offering the watermelon I mean. The Eagles have an African American QB and likely will not win many games without him in the lineup. But that's ok. He is merely a warrior in the arena for the whites to enjoy. The baby in question is merely a fan and as such, is non human according to the drunk guy. Incidentally, if it were me, I may have accepted watermelon. It's delicious.
On a personal note, I am in the process of adopting a non white baby (Asian) and it is likely that the first time anyone decides to call her a "G" word, I may set a bad example and rip off someone's head. So I commend the author of this article and even though the Eagles got smoked, I hope they had a good time.

4. Congrats on the adoption
and good luck keeping your temper. It is my experience Americans are much more used to asian babies with white couples, though.

8. Thank you
And I suspect you are correct when saying that Americans are more used to seeing Asian kids with whites. But my wife is Asian as well and the kid in question is hers. And frankly, if someone drops a racially charged word around her, I may just lose it as well. Anyway, it sounds like the little fella at the football game has a couple of fine parents. Let's hope that someday our children can be judged solely on character instead of race.

5. my precious nieces are Asian
My sister and brother-in-law's two little girls are Asian and adopted, beautiful precious members of our family (I was privileged to go to China with her for the adoption of her younger daughter last January). People say some of the strangest things to her; they tend to ask how much the girls cost, or ask if they are "real" sisters. I have trouble understanding how people can be so rude, or so like animals that they can't understand the concept of love over simple biology.

Luckily the rudeness she encounters is of the ignorance variety and not the hate variety. Knowing my sister, whose temper is like my own, she would have needed bailing out by now if someone had used the "G" word on her babies.

15. Thanks again.
I just got finished wrestling with him in the bath. The smile is wonderful, and he's a wonderful even-tempered baby, for sure, but the boy sure has a lot of energy for this 52 year old father.

9. LOL, You ain't getting him, stick with Campbell
And as an ex-Philadelphian I am appalled but not surprised at this in the slightest. I love my hometown, but pound for pound I have always believed it to be one of the most bigoted cities in the country if not the world.

16. The racist probably thought the parents were "in on" the joke
One remarkable thing about Republicans is that they think we are the weird ones. Their attitude is, "You're white - why do you vote Democratic?" Same thing here - "You're white - you must find this funny"

I'm sorry that you had to run into that sorry excuse for a human being.

Jack is a lovely child.
