Adventures in forensics hold anthropologist

Clyde Snow's work has helped bring justice to families of crime victims across the globe. He speaks tonight at WSU.

BY KATHERINE LEAL UNMUTH

The Wichita Eagle

......The internationally known forensic anthropologist visited Wichita State University on Wednesday as professors there tried to drum up support for a new program in that field.

He spoke about his work in Argentina, identifying the victims of the Dirty War, or guerra sucia, that took place from 1970 to 1984. The military leaders abducted those suspected of subversion and tortured them. Perhaps 30,000 were killed.

They exhumed the bones of the desaparecidos, or "disappeared," many of whom were university students. The team testified in the trials of military generals who were convicted, using the case of a pregnant student: Liliana Pereyra, 21, who was murdered. He flashed a picture of a solemn, beautiful, dark-haired young woman, followed by photos of her skull.

"With a guy like John Wayne Gacy or a serial killer, it will catch up to you," Snow said. "But you're home free if you're a head of state."
