Town Hall Recap NY-20: I have met the wingnuts, they are very scared and dumb as hell

Sun Aug 09, 2009 at 12:19:35 PM PDT
Change Vs NOOOO!!!

This is my personal account of Saturday's town hall with Representative Scott Murphy.

I have met the wingnuts and looked into their eyes, and they are very scared, badly misinformed, angry, and dumb as hell.

Early on the screamers tried to troll out the event. Representative Scott Murphy (D-NY20) answered back with a line that sums up the whole argument when he said

"When we are done people can tell me what they hate."

I have broken this diary up into four sections, including a breakdown of Congressmen Murphy's conversations with the public and his stance on Health Care reform, as well as pictures from the event, the lobbyists role in all of this, and a statement on the need to throw bipartisanship overboard from now on.

Having engaged the GOP base firsthand, I can easily state that these are the dumbest people in the country.

MinistryOfTruth's diary :: :: Part 1. Congressman Scott Murphy (D-NY0)

I personally told Scott Murphy on behalf of Progressives everywhere and the Daily Kos community that a Robust Public Option is the only true reform, short of Single Payer. I have told him that Co-Ops are a joke and unacceptable. I also offered him our support in the future, should he support us in return.

2. Scared and dumb as hell is how they're programmed by their...
religion and the media they listen to. Their handlers know what they're doing!

3. I am struck at these scream fests how many appear to be elderly.
So what health insurance are they covered by. I would think many get Medicare and Medicaid. So how are they against government care? I wish the media would interview these people and ask them what troubles them. The KOS blog sounded like they were having some fun at their expense but I would have liked to hear who they really are.

11. The "media" doesn't always interview them well.

Chris Matthews had that dumb, sloppy-looking guy who brought a gun to the Obama event on Hardball. The guy said "all our freedoms are being taken away". Matthews asked what freedoms the guy was talking about and the response was "there is a whole litany of them". There was no request from Matthews for an enumeration. Damn!

Here's the question I want asked and answered whenever one of these nuts starts whining about how their "freedom is gone":

Exactly and specifically what is it that you are not free to do now, in August, that you were free to do last December?

That's it. One question. Ask it and wait for an answer. Even trying to take their side briefly, I cannot think of a single thing that Obama has done that removes any freedom from anyone. (In contrast, it is easy to enumerate freedoms taken away by bush in his wretched "Patriot" Act and elsewhere.)

So what is this "litany"? What on earth do they think they mean when they say "Obama controls every aspect of our lives"? (And wasn't it bush and cheney that pushed the Imperial Presidency, sidelining Congress, the people's representatives?) Is it all just parroted Limbaughshit and Beckerwocky? Shouldn't they have to give examples, beyond citing a "litany"?

The stupidity and ignorance of these people is overwhelming. Let's expose it!

4. He's right, you can't talk sense to a crazy person
If they're waving signs around and braying, they're in no mood to listen.

take their Medicare away from them.

" Sign Up!, Ready to Go!"

"With just your signature, you will have no more Medicare."

Doesn't Medicare have a form to Opt Out?

7. Big Time. Threaten "Medicare for all, or Medicare for none."
That'll get their attention - for a couple of seconds, anyway.

10. Tell them, "Double Dare You to Opt out of your Medicare Now!`
There would be silence.

6. Dumb? Some probably are, but most just listen to and read the propaganda.
Edited on Mon Aug-10-09 11:52 AM by bertman
They think we're the dumb ones.

If they were dumb they wouldn't get out with signs and attitudes and give their representatives HOLY HELL. They'd just sit at home and whine like most of us liberals and centrist Dems are doing now.

This shit makes me sick to see. It's disgusting but it's going to get worse.

Apparently Nervous Nancy and her Sidekick Steny have started uttering some belated and feeble warnings about the mob rule we're now experiencing. WE NEED REAL LEADERSHIP!! Where are our leaders??

Starting with you, President Obama.

P.S. on edit, I agree with Go Clark. Ask them to stop being socialists and opt out of Medicare. Great idea.

9. I noticed you talked about the crazy screamers and the left but I'm curious
if there were any moderate people there at all? I'm planning on attending an AARP town hall meeting where the representative who is going to be there is Republican but appears to be for health care reform though I can't tell exactly how much for it he is and whether or not he would fold before the loud screaming minority.

But my point or question is where are the independents and moderates on all of this? I don't believe we can just sit by quietly and am glad you spoke out at the meeting in an effort to at least deflect some of the scream rhetoric but I'm just wondering if any moderate people attend these events and what their reactions are.

12. Moderate people typically get drowned out by screaming fanatics.
Some may be afraid they will be attacked outside the hall if they speak up. What do you say to thugs?
