3. We always covered our heads when entering the Catholic Church
This stopped but not that long ago. I never gave it a thought just did it.

5. And men had to uncover their heads
Still true in U.K. If tourists go into Westminster Abbey, men are asked to don their hats.

15. Fifty years ago sounds fairly long ago to me.
Besides, I never heard of police women being required to cover their heads in church -- not that there were many police women back then, either.

6. when i went to a mosque, we did too
it was a sign of respect of customs and not a big deal - plus the women are usually in a different room with only women and children.

7. Respect for who? Not for women. Different room too? Accepting this is why it is still happening.

9. respect for the women whom we were with
it is what they requested - not the men, whom we never saw. is it so hard to believe it may be what they wished?

17. If the women are in a different room, then they shouldn't need to cover
their heads -- that's for when men are around.

8. Are they complaining about it?
The story is not clear about whether the women cops mind doing this.

14. Funny line in the link
"So, if Cops have to wear scarfs in a mosque, will they have to get naked in a nudist colony??"

I'd be down with that. Especially for Muslim cops. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

18. So are women officers then forbidden to enter the 'men's section' of the mosque?
Edited on Tue Jul-28-09 02:10 AM by tomm2thumbs

Would this apply to female firefighters during an emergency? Where do you draw the line here?

I would expect if any officer is on duty for a case, they should feel they can enter unimpeded by something which could actually be a safety issue or impede their ability to react as they need to in order to do their duty. And as far as being somewhere appropriate, they should be able to enter a men's room if need be, so I don't know what this is all about unless it is simply as visitors to the mosque.

Seems to me if the officer wants to do it, that is fine, but if they do not, that is not their religious belief and on official business, they would not be required to do so.
