So, You're Saying God's Really a Turtle?

CORRESPONDENT OF THE DAY

Tammy Battista's letter, "Universe Wasn't Made Out of Nothing," reminded me of a story told by the great cosmologist Stephen Hawking about the philosopher/mathematician Bertrand Russell.

It seems the Cambridge don was giving a public lecture on astronomy when a little old lady in the balcony stood up and said, "You've got it all wrong, Professor Russell. The world is really a flat plate, resting on the back of a giant tortoise."

The bemused lecturer, having heard this oriental myth before, responded, "But what supports the tortoise?"

"Why, another, larger tortoise," replied the confident lady.

Beginning to lose patience, Russell said, "But what does that --" And before he could finish his sentence, the lady replied, "You're a very clever young man. But there's no use, Dr. Russell: It's turtles all the way down."
