I originally published Makin’ The Nut on 9/5/2005, in the immediate aftermath of Katrina. Even today, most of the emotions I expressed in the article are still operative. Time hasn’t diminished my outrage nor, in the final analysis, my thesis that the national will doesn’t exist to cast off the shackles.
