Disgruntled former employee makes headlines
"Bush ignored peril, Clarke says" (Thursday).

Really? How is it that an unsubstantiated charge from a disgruntled former employee makes banner headlines?
The whole episode with Richard Clarke seems fishy. To me it seems like a sophisticated political operation: His book rushed to print, the coordinated TV shows, the dramatic public testimony, the 9/11 families' involvement, the media cooperation. Clearly this was a Democratic election-year ploy to attack President Bush on his strength, his leadership in the war on terror.
Getting Clarke, a Republican, on board to say these things about the Bush administration was a bold, clever gambit that required a lot of behind-the-scenes maneuvering. There is only one man who has the cunning, ruthlessness, boldness and creativity to conceive of and pull off a propaganda coup like this: Bill Clinton.

INT. crummy freeper apartment day. He is hunched over a can of spaghettios that he can't get open. When the canopener slips from the can for the third time, he clutches the can in his fist-

I found another Freeper letter further down the same page, and I sent this email to the paper:

In your Wednesday, March 31st LTTE section, I noticed this:

Bush administration didn't have crystal ball

I find it interesting that the Bush administration is being blamed for essentially not being clairvoyant enough to know that 9/11 was about to happen. But who's really responsible for that happening?

Terrorist pilot Mohammed Atta blew up a bus in Israel in 1986. The Israelis captured, tried and imprisoned him. As part of the Oslo agreement with the Palestinians in 1993, Israel had to agree to release so-called political prisoners. However, the Israelis would not release any with blood on their hands.

President Clinton and his secretary of state, Warren Christopher (who was also in charge during the Somalia debacle), insisted that all prisoners be released.

Thus Atta was freed and thanked the United States by flying an airplane into the World Trade Center.

You'll find this at the excellent Urban Legends website at Snopes.com:

"In case you didn't know ...

Terrorist pilot Mohammed Atta blew up a bus in Israel in 1986. The Israelis captured, tried and imprisoned him.

As part of the Oslo agreement with the Palestinians in 1993, Israel had to agree to release so-called "political prisoners." However, the Israelis would not release any with "blood on their hands."

The American President at the time, Bill Clinton, and his Secretary of State, Warren Christopher, "insisted" that all prisoners be released. Thus Mr. Atta was freed and eventually "Thanked the US" by flying an airplane into Tower One of the World Trade Center."

It's one of those e-mails that has gone around the net many times, and now it has been copied and pasted into your letters page. By the way, Snopes.com has debunked this, and you can read their review at: http://www.snopes.com/rumors/atta.htm

Damn, they're so fucking lazy they can't even make up their own bullshit, have to paste it into a LTTE!

I love the smell of burning Freeper in the morning!!
