Richard Shelby wants Senate to filibuster stimulus bill

By Lance Griffin

Published: February 2, 2009
U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Tuscaloosa, said he is prepared to filibuster the proposed economic stimulus bill, but fears enough Republicans will side with Senate Democrats to override any attempt to block the bill’s passage.
Shelby’s remarks came during a county meeting Monday morning at the Wiregrass Rehabilitation Center in Dothan.

The Senate is expected to debate a proposed $900 billion stimulus bill this week. A similar measure passed the House last week. Shelby said the plan will not provide the quick boost the economy needs.

“Are we prepared to filibuster? Hope so,” Shelby said. “But I’m afraid we may have two or three (Republicans) that might jump ship.”
Democrats control 58 seats in the Senate. Sixty votes are needed to end a filibuster.
More updates from Shelby’s county meeting Monday morning will follow here at dothaneagle.com.

3. It won't take much and they don't have much of a base anyway.
Anymore, anyhow.

11. For many (not all) in Shelby's Alabama that could be a while...
I would not hold my breath for the majority of bigots and hate-mongering or fear-mongering ass-hats who elected him to represent them to suddenly rise up against him or that message any time soon...

2. Hey Senator, did your mama make you this stupid or did you have to develop it on your own?
This would be the stupidest political move ever made by a previously major party. If my stomach weren't in such a tizzy from a bug, I would buy popcorn for this little showdown.

Feeling lucky Shelby, are ya punk?

4. "Shelby said the plan will not provide the quick boost the economy needs."

So the Repubs are experts in knowing how to quickly boost the economy? What did they do for eight years, besides allowing their wealthy cronies to raid the US Treasury? Maybe if they hadn't saddled us with the Iraq invasion and banking and finance deregulation, we wouldn't be needing a "quick boost" for the economy!

8. You know, I'm sick of this bullshit, too...
people who make sweeping derogatory statements about other states/regions, but who are too chickenshit to list their own hellhole on their profile, that is.
Do you really think anyone from Alabama who posts here actually voted for that ignorant piece of shit?
If you want to post insults at people who actually did vote for him, head on over to Freeperville and spew your crap at them.

9. Shelby and his party are suicidal......
They have no clue, or if they do they don't give a shit - as to how bad the economic meltdown is, and....

....how this disaster is affecting every citizen in the country.

Let them filibuster and make a lasting impression on those who have lost jobs and homes and who are quickly running out of unemployment benefits and most important of all, running out of hope.
