The Pagans are Coming! Run Away!
Michael Novak of National Review Online has decided that the Obama Presidency, after just five days or so, represents a “relapse into paganism.” Stop giggling now. Novak is serious. He’s saving the lines about Obama and Neanderthals until the second week of the Presidency. After that, Micheal Novak will have run the gamut of his wit.

2. Paganism is the first religion...
and probably the best, religionwise. Respecting the earth, nature, and all forms of life. What is wrong with that? Well, for one thing, it goes against the Republican ideology. They hate life, and are here to destroy it.

6. Thanks!
I'm a neo-pagan according to the beliefnet test that tells you what religion you are.

Never heard of it before, but it sounds kinda nice the way you put it.

Were Native Americans considered pagans?

Pagans usually have holy wars waged against them. My Estonian ancestors and their neighbors the Latvians and Lithuanians were the last pagan holdouts in Europe.

33. Yep
Hi, I work for Beliefnet. In common language, "pagan" means anything that isn't one of the Big 5 (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism) but in proper usage, religions can be broadly divided into monothestic (single personified god, includes most versions of the Abrahamic faiths); dualistic/pantheistic (multiple personified gods i.e. ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians); pagan/neo-pagan (all earth-based faiths, "neo" just refers to a modern revival of or inspiration by those faiths, Wicca is included here) and philosophies (any belief system that doesn't actually worship something). Granted, there are still faiths which can't be categorised (i.e. Shinto) but that covers most things.

Neo-Paganism is either a revival of ancient earth-based faiths (described as "reconstructionism") or new faihs inspired by those practices. Most have a heavy emphasis on living in harmony with the earth and other living creatures (the ancient versions varied wildly in how they felt about other humans). Look it up on Wiki, it's fascinating stuff.

(full disclosure: I am not a pagan, I am a Luciferian Satanist).

10. I can only fucking hope.
Pagans are really nice and don't shove their beliefs down other people's throats, lack large centralized religious institutions, and tend to posess reverence for all life.

They also tend to have a sense of humor about their beliefs which is one of the reasons I consider myself one.

16. I would REJOICE if the Christians would run away whenever I showed up!
I'm sick of their condescending, fairy-tale, holier-than-thou pompousness. No. I do NOT want them to "pray" for me, just go away & leave me alone.

Our country began it's spiral downward when the Religious Right was afforded way too much power than their numbers justified.

Onward Pagans!

Now they're using paganism. When this doesn't work they will seek out another epithet.

27. Paganism is when you worship more than one god
Ancient Judaism was paganism. They worshipped a council of gods with El being the head god. Yahweh, Baal, Elohim were the sons of this god. Do they sound familiar? They should, all three are in the bible. Yahweh ends up being the god that Christians worship today. Most Christians don't know this because they don't bother to study the history of their religion or the religion (Judaism) that gave birth to Christianity. So in essence, Christianity was born from paganism.

30. Something we need to change, I looked up the word pagan in the
Merriam-Webster dictionary it said : heathen. So I looked up heathen and it said : uncivilized. WTF? So now if we don't "believe" we are uncivilized? We who are for peace and social acceptance and helping each other and giving back to nature are the uncivilized ones????:banghead:

34. Slight misunderstanding there
What I hope they were referring to is the original meaning of the words. The words "pagan" and "heathen" weren't originally the name of faiths, they were insults directed at believers in those faiths by (mainly) Christians. Originally, Christianity spread first into the cities and towns and only into the countryside much later so originally, "pagan" and "heathen" meant something akin to "bumpkin" and so became a byword for being uncivilised.

At least, I hope that's what they meant.
