Brothers Mistaken For Gay Attacked, One Dies
Update: Victim dies a week after attack

Events leading up:

Sucuzhanay (suh-KOO-chen-eye) and his brother Romel, 38, were walking arm-in-arm after a night out when a sport utility vehicle pulled up near them at a Brooklyn stoplight, police said.

Witnesses said they heard the men in the car shouting anti-gay and anti-Hispanic slurs at the brothers. The attackers jumped out of the car and smashed a beer bottle over Jose Sucuzhanay's head, hit him in the head with an aluminum baseball bat and kicked him, police said. Romel Sucuzhanay was able to get away; the attackers drove off after he returned and said he had called police, authorities said.

His mother, Julia Quintuna, obtained a humanitarian visa late this week to visit her injured son. She landed Saturday only to learn that he had died, Moya said.

1. Pehaps DEMs should push for sexual orientation in hate crimes laws.
Might even have some collateral benefit to heterosexuals erroneously identified by very selective murderers as gay.

Nah.... it might involve expending political capital and there are more important issues to address like the economy that aren't shall we say... 'special interest'.

Got it! Include *only* people erroneously identified as gay, (but in fact straight)in the protected category.

That way we won't risk antagonizing 'values voters'.

2. To Christians, beating and murdering LGBTs is not a crime, but a virtue!
Christians are opposed to laws outlawing bullying in schools, thinking that gay kids deserve a beating, and laws that would classify as hate crimes any criminal act against persons because they were LGBTs.

Next time I will root for the Lions when they face the Christians!

6. Diclotican - It is against everything IndianaGreen believes in, too.

I believe he was being sarcastic when saying that beating gays is something Christians believe is a virtue, he didn't mean it.

It is painful for everyone who hears about this story.

It is just horrible wrong, and don't something that everyone who are cristian support.. I at least are not doing it, I would call it wat it is, murder...

12. You are wrong,
and I, as a Christian, find this statement offensive.

Please do NOT lump all Christians together with the bigots among us. Bigots are bigots. There are Christian bigots, to be sure, and there are atheist bigots, agnostic bigots, Jewish bigots,...I could go on and on.

4. Note the homophobes were also racists
And note that no one is safe when hate is given reign. Little known fact, at the Stonewall Uprising, almost 40 years ago and also in NYC, one of the people badly beaten by the NY PD was Dave Van Ronk, a folk singer and straight guy. He was just walking by. The Police dragged him into the bar and beat the hell out of him. No one is safe when hate is given reign.

8. Is that enough now Huckabee or do we still need more to die off
to represent something valid to you?

My heart goes out to this family

Queer, armed and a pretty damn good shot, thanks to my training in the Army - one more reason way too many don't want us to serve.

13. It is for this reason that a whole durn lot of us
queers are armed and are pretty damned good shots. I was raised in the hills, learned to shoot early on. I was in the military and always qualified at the top of my company. (Y'know us gays have to overachieve :) ). My partner is a damn good shot, too, with a rifle and shotgun. I'm showing him how to handle my pistols as well.

We don't just take shit any more. We get our permits, exercise our 2A rights, and stay within the law. We expect our neighbors to stay within it, too. If they can't, oh well. In diametric opposition to what mama used to say, it'll hurt them a lot more than it will me.

9. I heard on a local news station that attacks on gay people increased this year.
They said it was probably due to the election. Hello, is there any doubt left that the GOP is the party of Hate and that they are the most anti-American party ever to exist. There destructive business of divide and conquer has lasting effects on people's lives.

10. Oh, this is so fucking disgusting!
This is because so many think homosexuality is wrong. Kissing a man is "puke inducing!" Being affectionate with another man is "gross."

FUCK ALL OF YOU THAT CAN'T SEE HOMOPHOBIA FOR WHAT IT REALLY IS!!!!! FUCK YOU ALL!

"Hahahaha" Bush and McCain in bed together! "Hahahaha" Tap those shoes! "Hahahaha" Ann "The Man" Coulter (Yes, I know that is transphobia)!

It's so funny til someone loses an eye...or his/her life!

11. The non-angry response.
I feel for them both.

In 1994, I was working in my office late. I stopped someone who was not supposed to be in the building (I worked for a university and visitation hours were over). He told he was there to see his girlfriend. I explained policy and said he could return the next day at noon. He replied with something along the lines of: "so faggots like you can get to do what they want?" I said, "Excuse me? I don't set the policies and my sexual orientation is not the issue. You can return tomorrow at noon, or I can call the police and you can spend the night in jail. Your choice!" To which he replied: "I saw you kissing on your blonde faggot friend. So, why can you get to do what you want, but I can't?" Of course, at that point in my life, I didn't like blondes...at all! So I asked what he was talking about. When he explained, I realized, he was talking about my BROTHER! I kissed him on the cheek before he left the building (and a stint overseas). I told him, unprofessionally, "You dumb fucking POS, that was my little brother! I am so sorry I decided to show him I love him, not knowing where he is going to defend our country (he was USAF). You have a fucking problem with that?!" He just looked dumbfounded and said "well, I didn't know!" I said: "no, shit Sherlock! Are you worried I might want to fuck you? Well, let me put those fears to rest...I wouldn't fuck you with someone else's cock!" I guess the idea of facing an irate 5'7" "fag" was too much for him because he left and he never came in my building again (to my knowledge....perhaps he used a side door illegally).

As my granny said, "don't believe everything you read, and only half of what you see."

So this kind of behavior is still acceptable in this country? Pathetic. Truly pathetic.
