GOP Intellectual Center: Goldwater, McCarthy, Reagan, Elmer Gantry?
Edited on Mon Dec-01-08 08:05 AM by Stingo
Neal Gabler points out that today’s Republicans are more like Joe McCarthy than Ronald Reagan or Barry Goldwater. Alas, such comparisons are becoming as trite as that comparison Godwin’s Law describes. Let’s forumulate another analogy. Is Elmer Gantry too trite to use? Paradise Lost? How about D.W. Griffith’s Birth of a Nation?

1. Today's Republicons remind me more of Attila the Hun.
They pillage political discourse and send death threats to those who would oppose them.

2. Attila
was civilized compared to these folks. But that pile of naked bodies from Abu Ghriab does remind one of Tamerlane.

I guess in large part of Europe, who was hit by Atilla the Hun they had a little another story than this.. But anyway compared to Tamerlane yes Atilla was indeed civilized.. At least some... At least he respected the Walls of Rome. Even that his Ransom note was grand.. And the Romans could even after this celebrate as nothing had happend..

And still today almost 1900 year later Atilla the Hun have a sound to it, in large parts of europe, who was hit hard by his army of pillages.. But then he was not the last one to going into europe in that times. And definitely not the least.. The 400s was hard times in Europe, as in Asia too.. But the Mongols was to imper ie builders, and once had an empire who stretched from Europe to China.. 1200 Eurasia was a place where trade and comers could travel wast distances, and where some sorts of peace was the norm.. Compared to all the in fight in Europe, the Mongolian empire locked like a peacefully empire.. But in the end the Mongolian empire was out of luck, and over a couple of hundred year the whole empire crumbled..

Many of the other kings name in the mongolian empire is long time forgotten, but Atilla the Hun will forever be a part of our legacy I guess.. It is an reason that the name Atilla have been used for so many year after his death.

No, not Eastern europe I am afraid, you have to keep an aye little north on the continent. Norway in fact.. And for the record, i was never the brightest student in english;( Never say I am proud of it either but i do manage to type it some how..

Ah, you are an Lindquist, it must be interesting to work out where people are from then?.. Or at least to understand where the people are from.. The type of education they might have and that type of things:).. Must be interesting to had learn at least a couple of languages.. Myself have just english, danish and swedish to put forward in the linguist thing.. But I am better to read than to write english then, even that it take some time to understand what is written there...

7. "Intellectual" doesn't really go with "GOP" these days.
Goldwater was full of shit, but he was way the heck more "intellectual" than any Republican I can think of alive today.
