ut cyanuric acid can be produced by hydrolysis (chemical addition of water) of melamine. It is not yet verified that both chemicals were separately ingested in the body to cause the kidney stones. Or perhaps some of the melamine in the contaminated glutens was converted to cyanuric acid. Or there may be a biochemical mechanism where melamine may be converted in the body to cyanuric acid. Then solid crystals can form and kidney failure may occur due to this mechanism. This may be what is happening to the babies in China and the pets in America. Dr. Sundlof does not have the answer either.

About 18 months ago, the FDA had found both chemicals in protein additives imported from China. Stephen Sundlof was director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine. Sundlof's job was to insure the safety of imported foods. He seems to keep a low political profile, but the evidence suggests that he is a quite stealthy neo-con. A Detective Columbo, he is not. At that time, wheat gluten, corn gluten and rice gluten imported from China, tested positive for melamine. This had been put in these foods to show a higher protein content than actually existed. Sundlof said then, that the fact that melamine has turned up in all three of these proteins lends "credibility'' to theories that it was intentionally introduced. "That will be one of the theories we will pursue when we get into the plants in China". Sundlof''s credibility has been going down ever since. But Sundlof had to get permission from the Chinese to check those food processing factories. Also at that time,The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington, D.C.-based group that advocates health and food safety, recommended that the FDA stop the import of grains from China. This was not done by Sundlof or the other FDA watchdogs, or should we call them watchweasels. Since then, Sundlof has been promoted to director of the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, for no obvious reason.

Melamine has now been detected in baby formulas, Nestlé's Good Start Supreme Infant Formula with Iron, Mead Johnson's Infant Formula Powder, and formula from Abbott Laboratories. Enfamil LIPIL with Iron had three positive tests on one sample for cyanuric acid. FDA officials are not blaming the Chinese. The melamine contamination in U.S.-made formula occurred during manufacturing, rather than being added intentionally. It should be reassuring to parents with babies that melamine can legally be used in some food packaging and can rub off into food from there. It's also part of a cleaning solution used on some food-processing equipment.

Sundlof continues to generate confidence for his corporate clients by permitting melamine in baby formula. The FDA has now set a 1 part-per-million safety level for either of the chemicals alone. It is interesting that Sundlof said dangerous health effects occur only when both chemicals are present. "The (U.S.) levels were so low ... that they do not cause a health risk to infants," Sundlof said. "Parents using infant formula should continue using U.S.-manufactured infant formula."

As recently as Oct. 3, the FDA had said, "FDA is currently unable to establish any level of melamine and melamine-related compounds in infant formula that does not raise public health concerns."
