'The war never ended here'

By Suleiman al-Khalidi

Baghdad - The first salvo of the Iraq war - a barrage of Cruise missiles and four bunker-busting bombs aimed at killing Saddam Hussein and his sons - slammed into Baghdad's Doura Farms area at dawn on March 20 last year.

A year on, the area is still a battleground.

"The war never ended here," said Ahmad Buaitha, 53, at his one-storey home near orchards where he grows raspberries and oranges on the banks of the Tigris river.

"Guerrillas fire mortars from the same orchards where Saddam's army was dug in at the start of the war."

As invading United States-led troops swept towards Baghdad, Iraqi battalions and anti-aircraft batteries stationed around Doura to defend the south of the capital were swiftly obliterated by American bombing.
