It’s Tuesday morning November 4, 2008, in spite of all of the protestations of the CFR-Bilderberg-Illuminati-Skull and Bones pundits, an election day of no small significance for many more practical and pedestrian reasons. While many still claim that this election’s competitors are the same, some of us seem to have the ability to discern differences- some tens of millions. Yes, I know, dim witted dupes who, if they knew the “truth” would sit at home and clean their AK’s and await the impending Apocalypse. But alas, rather than letting a few zealots hand the keys over to what is supposed to be the same candidate with the same goals, same values and the same supporters, some of us perceive the differences.
There’s a popular tactic that many resort to in an effort to bolster their failing, weak arguments and defenses, it’s called false moral equivalence. The advocate seeks to draw false moral comparisons between two phenomena which are not morally equivalent. It’s rampant on talking head blabber fests. It works something like this, John McCain is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Barack Obama is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations. Ergo, Barack Obama ad John McCain are the same. See? Idiotic in the first degree, yet a proud proclamation among those unable to tell the difference between a video game and reality.
Contrary to this apathetic fatalism that portrays itself as some kind of snobby know-it-all-everyone-else-is-a-moron-I’m-so-smart elite force of anarchy, it really is little more than a lazy, childish tantrum akin to holding your breath until you get your way. It is not a divine secret or some indication of higher intellectual ability to believe that money and power and those that have it wield a disproportionate influence on the political systems of all nations including and especially America. The important question is what are we going to do about it?
That’s where we need to focus our attention and efforts and that is likely where the biggest differences lie. I love George Carlin but his is not the plan I agree with. Abandoning the system is not a clearly superior choice to me. Right now, as corrupt, feeble and gamed as it is, we have before us the skeleton of a system that allows us the potential to change it from the roots up. I sometimes believe that this is either denied out of hand or just too much work for some of the doom and gloomers. The fact is that it would take work, time dedication, patience, perseverance and involvement, much of which is just too demanding for those who would rather blow shit up or hide in their cabins.
This election is important but it is just the first tiny step in a long uphill journey. Many newcomers have joined the political process for the first time. This election has generated record setting numbers of new voters and that is a great thing but by no means the end game. If Barack Obama wins, as all indicators predict, he will face an avalanche of libel, slander and all manner of sabotage. If you have been paying attention to this campaign you have seen the disgusting and backward fear mongers and bigots, the fruit of decades of right wing seeds of hate sewn by Fox News and Republican blowhards on radio and television. They are not going to disappear and even if they do retreat, the business of actually undoing the devastation wrought by the Bush/Cheney administration and governing will be very difficult.
Government makes a difference for better or worse. If all of us stay involved, if we make it part of our lives, part of being a good citizen, parent, American, human being, we can bring about change. We have to be patient and persistent. Abstinence is not the best policy for the future of America.
