Minorities call Owens on affirmative action

Groups representing blacks, Asians, Hispanics and other minorities chided Gov. Bill Owens and lawmakers Thursday for criticizing a recent Supreme Court decision upholding affirmative action programs.

"Affirmative action plays a critical role in our state's efforts to achieve diversity in our colleges and workplaces. We cannot retreat on this issue of basic fairness," said former Democratic state Sen. Pat Pascoe.

Members of Colorado Unity backing affirmative action included the American Civil Liberties Union, the American Indian Movement, the League of Women Voters, the Latin American Research and Service Agency, the Asian Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Bar Association.
