Analysis: Socialist tag doesn't fit Obama
ST. CHARLES, Mo. — "Make no mistake," Republican activist John Hancock told a John McCain rally in this St. Louis suburb, "this campaign is a referendum on socialism."

Republicans have been pounding that theme in recent days, even though Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama hardly fits the classic definition of a socialist.

Critics point to Obama's plan to raise the top two tax rates on the wealthy as clear evidence of his socialist bent.

However, Len Burman, the director of the non-partisan Tax Policy Center, said that while Obama "would make the tax system more progressive overall, it would not be a radical shift."

It wouldn't qualify as socialism.

2. Why doesn't anybody ask Bernie Sanders- AVOWED "socialist"
Edited on Wed Oct-22-08 10:19 AM by butlerd
what he thinks about Obama? The fact that being "socialist" is NOT IMHO a BAD thing notwithstanding, Obama is definitely a MODERATE in pretty much every sense of the word- certainly NOT "the most liberal Senator in Congress" (It's actually pretty amazing how many of those there are-according to the RW anyway)!!!

3. To McCain: Why no tax cuts for hard working middle class? Only for the top 5%?
The question we need to ask McCain is: Why no tax cuts for hard working middle class Americans? Don't we work just as hard as wealthy people? I can't live off my investment income. I have to live off hard earned income.
