Election Matters: Thompson says no one is satisfied with McCain's campaign
John Nichols — 10/13/2008 7:53 am

CALENDAR: The Nov. 4 election is 22 days from today.

POLL POSITIONING: Democrat Barack Obama retains his national lead, although by a slightly narrower margin of 49.7 to 42.4 percent -- 7.3 points -- in the Real Clear Politics poll of polls. There are no new Wisconsin polls today; the last three gave Obama a 10-point lead in the battleground state.

AND NOW THIS FROM TOMMY THOMPSON: The former governor and (brief) 2008 Republican presidential candidate talked up McCain from the podium at several rallies in Wisconsin last week. But Thompson talked the GOP nominee down in an interview with the New York Times that has stirred lots of attention nationally.

Here's the section from the Saturday Times article that got a lot of notice:

"Tommy Thompson, a Republican who is a former governor of Wisconsin, said it would be difficult for Mr. McCain to win in his state but not impossible, particularly if he campaigned in conservative Democratic parts of the state. Asked if he was happy with Mr. McCain's campaign, Mr. Thompson replied, "No," and he added, "I don't know who is."

1. Oh I thought you mean "Mr. Clueless" himself, Fred Thompson. My fault.
