EU lawmakers demand Washington give Gitmo detainees right to fair trial

In an overwhelming 425-62 vote, with 29 abstentions, the EU Assembly passed a nonbinding resolution to demand Washington "immediately put an end to the current legal limbo" of detainees being held at the U.S. base in Cuba. "Every prisoner should be tried without undue delay in a fair and public hearing by a competent, independent and impartial tribunal," the parliament said.

It further called for U.S. authorities to process each of the prisoners at the base either under U.S. legal procedures, or to send the cases to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands.

The parliament said relations with the United States were "invaluable and could be a force for good in the world," but said President George W. Bush's decision to detain prisoners outside U.S. territory risked damaging those ties.

It said Washington's fight against terrorism "cannot be waged at the expense of basic shared values, such as the respect for human rights and civil liberties - a situation that is currently happening at Guantanamo Bay."
