Kucinich Opposes Bailout
Kucinich Opposes Bailout, asks, "Is this the US Congress or the board of directors of Goldman Sachs?"

Kucinich Opposes Bailout and asks, "Is this the United States Congress or the board of directors of Goldman Sachs?"

WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 28, 2008) -- Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today made the following speech on the floor of the House of Representatives regarding the proposed Wall Street bailout:

"The $700 billion bailout for Wall Street, is driven by fear not fact. This is too much money in too a short a time going to too few people while too many questions remain unanswered.

Why aren't we having hearings on the plan we have just received? Why aren't we questioning the underlying premise of the need for a bailout with taxpayers' money? Why have we not considered any alternatives other than to give $700 billion to Wall Street? Why aren't we asking Wall Street to clean up its own mess? Why aren't we passing new laws to stop the speculation, which triggered this? Why aren't we putting up new regulatory structures to protect investors? How do we even value the $700 billion in toxic assets?

"Why aren't we helping homeowners directly with their debt burden? Why aren't we helping American families faced with bankruptcy. Why aren't we reducing debt for Main Street instead of Wall Street? Isn't it time for fundamental change in our debt based monetary system, so we can free ourselves from the manipulation of the Federal Reserve and the banks? Is this the United States Congress or the board of directors of Goldman Sachs? Wall Street is a place of bears and bulls. It is not smart to force taxpayers to dance with bears or to follow closely behind the bulls.

Dennis Kucinich is a congressman from Ohio and a 2008 presidential primary candidate. http://kucinich.us/ The best way to reach congressman Kucinich is through the information on his congressional website

1. Well, according to many here Kucinich must be wishing for America's financial apocalypse.
For the record: I agree with Kucinich.

11. Dennis just earned another contribution from me.
Funny. I left Cleveland 6 years ago, and now live in Florida, and I've donated to Dennis several times over the years.

Yesterday, I got a robo-call from Jim Trakas, his opponent. In Florida.:wtf:

2. When Kucinich takes a position, I pay attention.
I do not understand all the ins and outs of trying to improve the economy, but Kucinich represents a responsible leftward position, and I'm going to take the trouble to try to understand his arguments here.

8. I don't know who the 'you all'
are referring to. It is not DU that is the problem, it is the American people along with the media and government that demand a Presidential candidate avoid certain truths, which Dennis is not capable of doing. If he was, he wouldn't be Dennis, and he very well might have been our nominee.

6. Kucinich is usually on the right side of any issue.
And he's asking some damn good questions here that I wish the rest of Congress would ask. Sometimes it seems (true or not), that he's the only one in Washington fighting for the people.

9. Kucinich has a long record of fighting for the people
that's why I supported him in the primaries. I only wish the rest of America could see in Kucinich what I see in him, perhaps the outlook for America would be very different from what we see today.

10. Dennis is my man!
He always sees the problem. This is too much money to be spending without knowing just what in the hell we're buying. I mean, really, really indebting future generations.

There is time to hold hearings and investigations.

Who is really going to pay for this debacle? Programs for the poor? Infrastructure? SS recipients? Veterans?

According to McLame, you can cut or freeze everything except the military.

13. Where are the hearings to investigate how this happened?

Who caused this mess? Are you telling me that there are no rules and regulations to prevent a potential $700 billion economic mess? Are you kidding me?

Bush admits to starting this mess.

As stated, President Bush ‘dismantled barriers’ to create more homeownership. Dismantled barriers means look the other way on borrower income and other documentation. Here is an excerpt from his speech:

President Hosts Conference on Minority Homeownership
October 15, 2002

“Freddie Mac recently began 25 initiatives around the country to dismantle barriers and create greater opportunities for homeownership. One of the programs is designed to help deserving families who have bad credit histories to qualify for homeownership loans.”

18. well Dennis was one of the lone voices against the war and many
of the other things that everyone continues to roll over for - it appears we have a one party system now - there is no reason to vote anymore - they just do what this evil admin wants and have been for years - they are proving they are no different than the other party and that they too do not care about the people and only care about the stock market and banks and their own salaries - they have lost a lot of people with this show

19. If looking for a principled position, look to Rep. Kucinich:
I just wrote to my Representative and requested that he meet with Representative Kucinich to discuss the wisdom of the bailout. Rep. Kucinich has consistently been correct in his analysis of the issues facing this nation. Possibly naively, I urge everyone to contact their Representatives and ask them to consider what Rep. Kucinich has to say about this critical issue.
