The Terror that Marks September 11

Three historic events associated with terrorism have left their mark on September 11. In Chile (1973) a coup put an end to the constitutional government of Salvador Allende. In New York (1980) an assassination added to the list of Cuban victims by criminals based in the United States. Also in New York, the attack on the Twin Towers (2001) gave President George W. Bush the pretext to begin his "War on Terror"…

THE COUP AGAINST ALLENDE

"…my memory will be that of a man of dignity who was loyal to his country. I will pay for loyalty to the people with my life…I am certain that the seeds which we have planted in the good conscience of thousands and thousands of Chileans will not be shriveled forever."

Chilean history experienced one of its most tragic episodes. From the La Moneda presidential palace the people had listened to the above message from Salvador Allende, broadcast live as the towers of Radio Portales and Radio Corporacion were in flames. The ultimatum of bombing La Mondeda had been made.

The commander of the Armed Forces, Augusto Pinochet, with the complicity of the United States government, carried out a coup, applying the formula of State terrorism against a constitutional government elected democratically by the people. The events of June 29, 1973, known as the Tanquetazo, were a prelude to the coming events. They left the trail of the other imminent attacks against Allende’s Popular Unity government that would take place nearly three months later.
