Editorial in the Ketchican paper yesterday. Don't know if it was posted here
Alaska's Legislature shouldn't be forced to subpoena witnesses in the investigation into whether Gov. Sarah Palin abused her power when she dismissed the state's public safety commissioner.
Palin has, from the beginning of her administration, told Alaskans to hold her accountable. She also informed Alaskans, at the beginning of the investigation, that she welcomed it. "Hold me accountable," she dared Alaskans.
But since Palin was selected as the Republican vice presidential nominee, her administration has indicated it is less willing to allow the investigation. At least a dozen witnesses who work for the governor (and Alaskans) canceled interviews with the lead investigator, Stephen Branchflower, an Anchorage prosecutor. One of them is on paid leave, drawing a state paycheck of about $80,000 while on an ordered "vacation" of sorts.
Alaska's House and Senate Judiciary committees will meet Friday and decide whether to give investigators subpoena power. If it isn't granted, a thorough investigation won't occur and a cloud of suspicion remains over the Palin administration.
