1. I don't recall how it got installed,
but right-clicking on the page gives me a "translate page" option. Here it is:

US soldier

War hero as Trunkenbolde

Of Alexander Buergin

US military of the air cousin in Spangdahlem in the Eifel have a problem: Their soldiers are noticeable regularly as drunk accident drivers and Raufbolde. Now military strips in discotheques and Bars are discipline to implement.

DPA
Alcohol to tax: Accidents like these are to prevent the "Eifel Patrols"
The front side imprinted lies a car wreck in the ditch. The fat brake trace on the bitumen could not prevent the accident. Reason: Superelevated speed and alcohol. The driver: A US soldier of the close Air Force base in Spangdahlem with bit castle in the Eifel.

Accidents with American participation are not in the scope of responsibility of the Bitburger police rarity: In each third accident a military employee of the US cousin is Spangdahlem involved - often with parts per thousand in the blood. Also with arguments in taverns and discotheques not rarely Americans are also thereby, are called it at the local police.

US soldier with high accident rate

Embarrassingly for the Americans: Calculated also the troops inserted use the Iraq war let it lack the military virtues such as discipline and sense of responsibility. A fifth of the 5000 soldiers stationed on the Air Force base was with the fight against Saddam Husseins regime in the use. In the camouflage cap bomber of the type F-117-a they flew rocket and bomb attacks.

The military airport in the proximity of bit castle is beside RAM stone one of the largest US airports outside of the United States - and also one of the largest material and weapon camps in Europe.

Anxiously around the call of the troop the line introduced now a military patrol, which in surrounding clubs and taverns holds on weekend after drunk colleague look out.

US soldiers of the air cousin Spangdahlem start into the Iraq war: Some let military virtues miss
It concerns not drinking to forbid to soldiers "separates it to convince in comradely fashion, the car stands to leave", says iris Reiff, press spokeswoman of the air cousin. It answers a connection in the negative between Iraq war and the consumption of alcohol of the troop.

Each weekend now a patrol from four to six members of the base the popular Treffs of the Americans an attendance off and converses with the landlords about possible incidents. The American guests show understanding for this deterring method, which is to suffocate also disputes among themselves or with other guests in the germ.

Overhauling prohibition and deterring appearances

The nocturnal Aufpasser supplemental by further measures for the decrease of the accident rate. Thus the Commodore of the 52 imposed. Flier relay an overhauling prohibition for its young. A driving service is to facilitate the renouncement of the own car. Who deflects the offer and twice because of drunkennessness is noticeable, must count on drakonischen punishments - for instance on a Zurueckstufung in the rank.

But not only under influence of alcohol, but also in the clear condition the winding roads of the hilly Eifel represent a problem for Americans, who are from the homeland dead-straight used to Highways. Many of the recruits are hardly 20 years old and untrained drivers.

In addition comes: Cars with American number sign do not need German TUEV. Many Germans verscherbelten their bodies to the neighbouring soldiers, ageweak therefore. An military-internal check ensures however for some time for the fact that vehicles only working properly leave the eingangstor of the base.

The measures showed effect. The number of the accidents with participation of American fellow citizens decreased in the last years, says Klaus Schnarrbach of the Bitburger police inspection, is however further remarkably high.

Indeed that is 52. Air squadron with its 14,000 military employees still far removes from a clear lowering of the accidents: Two until three times daily announces the Crash statistics a new sheet metal damage appropriate at the eingangstor.

Mercifully, there seems to be no option to translate that mess back into German. (I'm guessing that a translation of this LOW quality doesn't violate copyright laws).

4. I'm still not sure what's involved.
But I don't recall that from before I upgraded this machine to Xp (US version). I set my browser to Japanese when I check Japanese websites, but that's only unencoding 2-byte characters rather than translating them. Otherwise, it's "Western European". The original of that page came up in what appeared to be glitch-free German.

3. probably Google Toolbar or similar
Edited on Fri Mar-05-04 03:56 AM by Kellanved
Anyway, some parts of the "translation" are really funny; example: "Many Germans verscherbelten their bodies to the neighbouring soldiers"

"Verscherbeln" is a dismissive word for "to sell". The original text says "Many Germans sell their decrepit cars to the neigbouring soldiers."

Still: the general meaning comes across.

5. I DO have a Google tool bar.
I was warned that it's primed with spyware, but I use it very frequently for web-searches. When I do that, I see the option: "Translate this page". The results are generally as clunky (and comical) as the above. But this is part of a lengthy right-click pop-up window, which I assume is from the Kingdom of Bill Gates.

6. it's not that bad

It provides the "translate option" and comes in two versions: with spyware and without (no advanced features). The only major security problem is the auto-update feature.
