For Bush, an Election-Year Powder Keg

The terrorists probably did not plan yesterday's attacks on Iraqi Shiites to coincide with the American electoral festival of Super Tuesday. But the timing is an apt reminder that this year's presidential election is likely to be shaped by events the Bush administration cannot control.

Vice President Cheney, in a trio of interviews with cable news outlets yesterday, brushed off the attacks as a sign of "desperation" among U.S. foes -- a response the administration has used for other bloody setbacks in Iraq. But administration officials also acknowledge that there is little that can be done to stop the attacks and that such violence is likely to worsen as power is transferred to Iraqis on June 30.

---snip--- (no longer desperation, just a by-product...but wait it's also major desperation :wtf: )

Bush administration officials counter that yesterday's attacks are a byproduct of U.S. progress. "What it is more than anything else is major desperation on their part, as we get closer and closer to standing up a new government in Iraq," Cheney told MSNBC yesterday. He also pointed to a "fairly significant decline in American casualties in the last couple of months."

4. "every time they claim a "decline in US casualties"..."
To me, the lull in combat fatalities usually means that the insurgency is planning and maneuvering for another hit. Again, this underscores the fact that we have no legitimate business being there.

6. Or the news about U. S. casualties is no longer being reported...
...at the level they were being reported before this recent "lull". And the previous casualty reporting is highly suspect as it is.

10. Our troops are holed up in our fortresses
Leaving the field unfought. So religious militias and the insurgency are increasingly free to wreak mayhem.

5. Decline in American causalities
because Iraq is one giant Fort Apache and American troups are holed up in their barricaded compounds while the rest of the country descends into anarchy and chaos. The past month was one of the deadliest months for Iraqi citizens.

7. Cheney is interesting in a cold sort of way....
when interviewing he sits with his head somewhat down
as though he is trying to hide from view. His face is
rather void of character for an older man...the face
of someone who has hidden his feelings for so long
that he lacks the character lines that make people
readable and gives us hints on how they have lived.
He breaks his eye contact by cocking his head inward
so as not to let one get a good view of his eyes and
he speaks slightly out of one side of his mouth while
his voice is void of emotional inflection so as not
to give signals of feelings.

His body language says he prefers to be hidden from
view and his communication style says he is rather
paranoid and focused on being invulnerable to others.

AWOL is surrounded by the strangest people....it truly
is rather scary!

8. Agree with your assessment
He is an insecure and paranoid man. The last time he ventured forth publicly was to rally international support to the proposed invasion of Iraq. His international campaign was a colossal failure resulting in no support, which the press strangely didn't comment on.

The only other times he has sallied forth from the bunker was to intimidate the CIA into reporting false estimates of the Iraqi situation. Other than administering the spoils of Pentagon defense contracts and carving up department of interior resources for his energy cronies he doesn't do much except lie to cover his tracks and confer with lawyers to conceal records of his meetings with industry cronies.
