Drilling lies into voters' heads

Republicans have picked their hot button for 2008. From John McCain on down, they're laying on that hot button as if their political lives depend on it.

McCain, Sen. Mitch McConnell and the rest want you to believe that the only thing standing in the way of cheap gasoline is a bunch of snooty Democrats who are withholding all the oil we could ever desire just 50 miles off shore.

Never mind that almost no factual evidence backs this view. The U.S. Department of Energy says it would be at least 10 years before new off-shore drilling could have any impact on prices. Global demand would quickly swallow up the additional oil.

And no less an oil man than T. Boone Pickens says we can't drill our way out of our energy problems.
