Credo of a conservative (with a GREAT punchline)
By Mark Oberzil in The Oregonian, 02/26/04

I am a conservative. I believe in staying solvent and out of debt.

I am a conservative. I believe in keeping my nose out of other people's business, their nations and their bedrooms.

I am a conservative. I believe in conserving our assets and our resources -- our air, our land, our water. Accordingly, I don't support or engage in wastefulness, inefficiency or lavish excesses.

MORE

I highly recommend this brief read. The punchline is terrific. dw

3. hmmm . . . now here's a tactic that might be interesting . . .
how about all liberals and progressives start calling ourselves "true conservatives?" . . . and using this column as our credo . . . hmmmm . . .

Fantastic idea and great column. I just sent it to all the Neo-cons who annoy me.

5. I love it.
I told a friend a while back that George&Co had bumped me farther to the left. But when I thought about it, I haven't gone anywhere. I'm still the pragmatic, hovering around the middle person I've always been. And where I'm most liberal is in the social issues where "I think an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." I think a lot of folks here can identify with this article.

6. Don't hate me, but..
I used to be a Republican, back when I was young and dumb. Then I met my husband, and since we talk about everything under the sun, I started really thinking about my politics and beliefs. And I came to the conclusion that the article puts forth - conservatives don't believe in conserving resources, aren't conservative about spending, are gd nosy, support big business, etc.

I've been a Democrat for 24 years, and I'm never going back to the dark side.

I've long felt that the terms "liberal" and "conservative" have lost their
meaning. Liberal was turned in to an all-purpose
perjorative by Limbaugh and his minions. The Bush neocons have destroyed
whatever meaning Conservative once had, as this writer so eloquently
points out.

We need to get past these labels, and start talking to each other. That's
what those in power fear most.
