Tuscaloosa News: "Rove should be tried for treason"
Edited on Sat Jun-07-08 05:12 AM by Syrinx
I love it when I see that headline in the daily paper of a small, Southern city. :)

(This is a few days old; sorry I didn't post it earlier.)

The stories of Siegelman's and Rove's departures from politics couldn't be more different. Recent disclosures, however, suggest that the wrong man was punished.

Libby took the fall. But Rove continued to serve the president until his retirement last year.

However, if Rove is guilty of the leak, as McClellan claims, he should be in jail for committing treason.

For his part, Siegelman, as we have said before, is hardly as pure as the driven snow. Yet there are serious questions about his conviction. That's underscored by the brief filed by a bipartisan group of 54 former state attorneys general from across the country that asks for his conviction to be reversed.

1. When small town Alabama says Rove should be tried for treason
then I would say Rove is in big trouble. Apparently the brief filed by a bipartisan group of state attorneys made a deep impression.

Glad to give the 5th rec, but thought it prudent to also kick so this remains at the top of the heap.

11. Town...?
Not a 4:PM sitting on McFarland at 15th on a close to 100 degree day with a busted a/c compressor, or a Friday night before the Tide plays when the Town doubles in size...lol

13. that reminds me of something
About ten summers ago, I was hanging around with this guy from Saudi Arabia. He was dating a friend's sister. His car was in the shop, and he asked me to drive him to the Federal building downtown to renew his green card, or something.

It was about 105 degrees outside, and probably 140 in my car (the AC was busted). Traffic was congested, so we were getting very little breeze.

This guy could speak English pretty well. We could communicate and everything, but sometimes he would get a word wrong.

We were both soaked with sweat.

He turned to me, and said in his very thick Arab accent, "Man, I'm really freezing."

You probably had to be there, but I cracked up and laughed my ass off.

So, you are a former Tuscaloosan living in Canada?

14. The reverse....
Dual citizen now spending most of my time in Tuscaloosa.

How about driving from the airport in Toronto, in January, with 3 guys from Poland. Driving down University Blvd, which is crammed wall to wall with office towers, one mentioned that Toronto had many, hookers. Confused, I asked where he had gotten that impression. They assumed all the people standing outside of the office towers smoking were hookers. I explained that smoking indoors had been ben outlawed years ago and it's common to see people crammed outdoors in freezing temps getting their nicotine fix. As they were all smokers, they were disappointed. The ironic thing was I was taking them to a public health conference.

7. 2 things about this
1. Tuscaloosa is home to University of Al.
( Bear Bryant, Crimson Tide football team )

Often such towns/cities have more liberal news bent.
Hopeful sign, that story.

2. Off setting that, the weekly Monroeville Journal, ( Harper Lee's hometown)
casually notified readers last month that the state syndicated political columnist
( who had been hitting hard on the Siegleman story, anti-Rove)
would be replaced by another political columnist....who turned out to be mum on any
Republican problems.

Rove has a stranglehold on Al.;( ;(

4. But the spinless won't do it.
Rove, Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Wolfovich (promised Iraq oil would pay for war when the oil companies profit), Powell, etc. are all traitors and profiteers for their own self interest.

Public service pays well today.

6. This may help re Alabama newspapers:

Comment: There are still a few conservative Republicans that line up with the old traditional Republican values, and don't accept Bush's corrupt idea of running our government. These honest republicans are considered outside Bush's circle and they are victimized along with the Democrats. They are falling fast because they are not endorsed by the Bushes and receive little help with campaign finances.

I'm surprised that as many Alabamians are informed as they are. It has been very hard to get the truth in Alabama about anything that involves Democratic politicians. Even the local TV and radio media pretty much parrots what the three largest newspapers in Alabama print. These newspapers are the Birmingham News, the Huntsville Times, the Mobile Press-Register which are owned by Communications giant Advance Publications, Inc.

Lobbyist Jack Abramoff, Michael Scanlon, Toby Roth, Rob Riley, etc. have represented big business clients (Mississippi Casinos, ExxonMobil, HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, etc) who have funneled large amounts of money through money laundering organizations, such as the Business Council of Alabama, to campaign funds and to these larger newspapers to endorse GOP politicians in return for political favors.

It is not certain, at this time, whether the corruption is isolated to the three larger Alabama newspapers or to Advance Publications Inc.

10. you're probably thinking of the Birmingham News
The Tuscaloosa News used to be a great paper. They won Pulitzers during the Civil Rights Movement. Perhaps ironically, they've gone seriously downhill since becoming part of the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group.

The two guys that write the editorials, Ben Windham and Tommy Stevenson, are pretty liberal guys, though.

We should get a twofer: Cheney and Rove, and throw in W for free.
