No sex please, we're sensitive, says America
Fury over sexy TV and videos has sparked a clean-up by networks who fear legal clampdowns and stiff fines

A new clarion call is echoing through TV stations across the United States: No sex please... we're American.

The furore over singer Janet Jackson baring a breast during the Super Bowl half-time show has wiped a slew of sex scenes and raunchy videos from America's TV screens.

Prudishness is sweeping across the mainstream TV networks which were stung by the outpouring of criticism over Jackson's 'Nipplegate'. Last week music channel MTV withdrew six of its racier videos from its daily schedules, switching them to slots after 10pm.

(snip)

Joanne Webb, a Texas woman with three children, is facing a prison sentence after fellow residents of the small town of Burleson told police she sold sex toys at Ann Summers-style parties.

Texas law says the toys can be sold only as novelties. As soon as Webb told her customers their sexual uses she committed a crime.

Webb, who faces two years' jail and a $4,000 fine, was arrested in an undercover police sting in which she sold officers a vibrator and explained how to use it.

2. America needs a flesh culture

Currently there is nothing that can be truly called 'culture' at all. This is a dramatic anomaly that are not seen in other countries. There is only this hype-driven icon-processed that stablishes what people 'do'.

In other countries media hype tries to follow the cultural complexity of the society. Here the society is driven to follow media hype. This cant be healthy

3. What's next, the burka?
Sick, sick sick... There's never any outcry like this over violence, but show a bit of boob and its the end of the world.

4. but gunning people down is still fine
this really distills in a nutshell how f***ed up this country is.

A nipple at halftime produces panic.

Meanwhile the average child is exposed to how many murders and acts of violence on TV? And not a peep about that?

8. You are right that the violence IS worse than the sex.
I have often considered it crazy that we permit so much more violence to be shown to our children than sex.

Of course, in this case, there is more to it than merely showing a breast. There is the whole show and the manner in which the breast was revealed. Of course, I wasn't watching, as I do not like football, so I did not see it all myself.

Prosecuting someone for selling sex toys is just plain wrong. I wonder if the zone of privacy surrounding sexual activity among adults could help this defendant? If sodomy cannot be prosecuted, then one would think selling a sex toy would not be punishable. Of course, selling a sex toy is commercial activity, and the Supreme Court has refused to extend Constitutional protections for commercial activity as far as they have extended Constitutional protections for individual activity. Commercial speech can be more strictly regulated than individual speech, in general.

5. This is probably why America is so violent ....
the two great titillations are sex and violence and since we suppress one (sex) so much it isn't surprising that we overdo the other

9. Here in Houston, a "Decency Clause"
was being debated by Harris County Commissioners--part of the contract for any entertainer using a county venue. Obviously inspired by the Jackson tittie incident, it would be quite vague. One of the august body mentioned it could forbid bestiality. That hasn't been a problem that I know of; maybe I don't get out enough.

I saw an interview with David Berg, a well-known local civil rights attorney, who was against it. He mentioned the first amendment & said that most acts would just skip Houston.

The performances discussed would not be broadcast to the world, but performed for people who pay to get in--who probably know what they're paying for.

Here in the city that gave the world the boob job!

10. Brown Paper Wrappers
It is really difficult to take children shopping. I mean the things that one can see through the window at Victoria's Secret. Should young boys and young girls be able to view those? (sarcasm)

What about two piece bathing suits at Target?

Maybe women shouldn't be allowed to wear anything that suggests they have breasts!

Shame on the president* for his flight suit. Now that was pornographic!
