Insurgents in Iraq continue their bombings but a captured memo sheds light on their desperation
02/12/04

With two vicious bombings this week, insurgents in Iraq have again served notice that they do not plan to allow Iraq to build its future without hindrance.

That's a shame, especially for the insurgents, which another development this week underlines. We're referring to the release of a document that American troops captured from a man believed to be an al-Qaida courier.

In it an insurgent leader, whom American officials believe to be Jordanian terrorism suspect Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, says he directed 25 bombings in Iraq and seeks financial aid from al-Qaida to continue these efforts.

If it is authentic, the document is striking because of its depiction of the insurgents' situation, which was said to be desperate, and their goals, which could fairly be described as diabolical.

The memo suggested that al-Qaida and its allies must do all they can to thwart the United States' efforts to return governance of Iraq to Iraqis. The United States wants to accomplish that turnover by the end of June.

(more delusional optimism)
