So McCain has himself a nomination. The end was about exciting and homogenous as the rest of their campaigns.
This whole exercise has been so lame that McCain was able to take a few months off and still step right back into the spot he had left. We saw the hilarity of the Tancredo adventure, the laziness of the guy they were all ready to hand it to in Thompson, Duncan Hunter, the multiple costume changes of Mitt Romney, and lasting until the last four the
scariest “national” candidate we have seen since 1948 in Ron Paul who was actually allowed on TV from the Reagan library. But what we didn’t see was any drama.
The circus is fine but when it leaves town the smell of peanuts in all their progression eventually fades and all that is left is thirst, thirst for commotion and intrigue and all that comes with drama.
It looks like we are going to have a spring time of such drama on the Democratic side. Hillary-Obama Obama-Hillary He-She Him-Her everyone will know what you are talking about it will permeate all parts of our lives. Americans love that crap. We follow celebrities as if we know them. When we don’t have enough drama in our own lives we sit and vicariously watch the shirtless and the fictional rich and even everyday “reality” people battle it out right in front of us. Not only do we like it we buy it in every size made available-my daughter once got an American Idol toy in a fast food meal it was nothing more than the logo and 5 seconds of the theme song. OH THE DRAMA!!!
But there is none with McCain. Oh he HAS had some but not now. He is about to be whitewashed in the GOP cleanser and propped up sealed off not to touch or disturb for another 5 months or so. Americans will return from their summer tanned rested and …..face-to-face with McCain. Cold dreary winter comes very early.
Okay it is ridiculous to predict what will happen in the future (just as it is to pre-write a narrative) but recent history does tell us something. You have to keep your product in the public eye even if it isn’t yet “buying season”. Any retailer will tell you that in spite of their cash cow coming home during the holidays you can’t
not advertise the rest of the year. You have to keep your brand in everyone’s head. We saw what happened to Rudy with his Florida strategy and we saw what happened to Hillary banking exclusively on “Super Tuesday”- being the front runners still requires that you pick them up and put them down otherwise you find someone gaining on you from behind
and the crowd rises to their feet
roaring for the come-from-behind-guy
we love that guy
we love the drama.
