I Had A Dream Last Night
I had a dream last night.

I was old. Much older that I am now, and it was dark and cold and I was alone. In the dim light given off by the blanket of stars overhead, I could sense before me the shapeless form of a huge dead animal. I did not know what the animal was; only that it was lifeless and massive. In my mind, I knew that I had played some small part in the killing of the beast, along with many others. At my feet the corpse of the thing was already starting to stink, although it was only recently dead.

As the cold began to seep into my weary old bones, and the smell of the thing started to envelop me, I thought that a fire would be just the right thing to drive back the cold and get rid of the rotting flesh before me. I knelt before the unknown carcass, and lit a small fire. Suddenly there were people near me, all around me. Some of them were living, some seemed to be only the spirits of those who had got in the path of the beast, and not survived. Some were the loved ones of those it had consumed. All were silent, staring at the dancing flames. As my small fire started to grow, the people began to throw objects into the fire, making it larger. Some threw bits of wood, but soon others began to throw various papers into the fire. The objects seemed to come from every direction at once, feeding the flames.

The fire became greater, and as it did so the flesh of the beast began to warm and rot even faster, the putrid scent filling the air. I could now dimly surmise the outline of the animal in the leaping flames. It appeared to have many heads. On each of the heads were sharp horns, twisted, corkscrewing, and curving back upon each other like a nest of thorns. Its hooves were cloven. At the rear was a long tail, naked and pink like a gigantic rat. The fur of the nameless thing was matted and filthy.

The fire began to rage, and people screamed with primal urgency as they threw things into the fire. I squinted and tried to see what they were burning. First I saw a mortgage start to curl in the flames. From behind me a man threw a sheaf of photographs. I stared at one picture and saw a man in a dark suit, holding hands with another man, bearded and wearing flowing robes. Next to it starting to darken, lay a photo of what appeared to be a pyramid of naked, hooded men. Soon both were consumed and the flames crackled as they were destroyed. A woman threw a thick sheaf of documents which looked like old bankruptcy court records. There were cardboard boxes, held tight shut with red tape that read “Top Secret”. Some men in suits threw what looked to be typewritten transcripts of conversations. Many threw stacks of credit card bills, and bank statements, and I saw a notice of foreclosure. From my left came a sheaf of old hospital bills, all stamped “past due” in red ink. A weeping young woman threw in a child’s death certificate. All in their turn were eaten by the flames. The fire roared as the multitudes came forward and added their personal fuel to the pyre.

I smiled to myself as the full image of the blackening beast became clear in the flames, and I knew it for what it had been. Suddenly a chair was behind me and I sat gratefully, and warmed myself and lifted my cold, arthritic hands to the fire, as before me burned the corpse of the dead GOP.

1. Link?
Powerful editorial. Could you provide a link, or did you write this yourself?

3. Then I'm even more impressed
I figured this was done by one of the high paid pundits at a major newspaper on a very good day. Excellent writing! Only wish I could R it more than once!
