Alberta columnists rush to Don Cherry's defence....Big suprise.

It is obvious this idiot doesn't understand the difference between free speech and attacking a group of people based on ethnicity. While I strongly disagree with the CBC censoring Cherry, I think something has to be done to stop him from spreading hate. ANd yes, it is hate. The French Englsih relations in this country are bitter enough (among some) without Cherry making comments to add to it. What I'd like to see, is a breakdown of french players who wear visors...if the figure supports what he said, then I'd have to back off.

But who was it on this board who said the Government doens't mess around with CBC?

1. When I've visited Quebec...
I was often treated rather rudely until folks figured out I was from the states. I'm of Scottish/English extraction, so I look like an Anglo Canadian.

I learned to speak broken French with an American Southern accent...Sounded ridiculous, but it worked. This is how I got the message of the real animosity between anglophones and francophones in Canada.

I love Quebec though, breaks up the North American banality. I mean, Le Poule Frite du Kentucky makes it almost palatable. They also have the coolest electric generating windmill along the St. Lawrence.

Your problems up there should inform us down here about our bi-lingual society.

2. Jeez, usually being an american is even worse
You got lucky. But I leived there for a while, I found the people there to be amazing, especially when they found out I was from B.C. THere's kind of a BC/ Quebec thing going on in the younger generations. But people from Ontario? Forget it, they were treated horribly. I myself was treated shabbily sometimes...especially in bars, where they'd serve you second when they heard your english accent.

Of course Ottawa has been pitting Quebec and the West against each other for years...yet no-one makes note of that juicy little fact.

3. Nah, I was driving a beat up Geo Tracker and my Girlfriend was
pierced and tattooed - so, while we were "ugly" in America, we were not Ugly Americans......
