Did David Hasselhoff really help end the Cold War?
Baywatch star David Hasselhoff is griping that his role in reuniting East and West Germany has been overlooked. So what part, if any, did the hunk in trunks play in ending the Cold War?

Barely a month after the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, the city that had been divided by politics for more than 40 years was united in song. And leading the chorus of several hundred thousand voices was a man hitherto known to the rest of the world for driving a talking car.

<snip>

For that seminal concert, on New Year's Eve 1989, Hasselhoff stood atop of the partly-demolished wall and belted out a tune called Looking for Freedom.

It was during Hasselhoff's current promotional tour of Germany that the Hollywood star made headlines for a remark about this event. Speaking to Germany's TV Spielfilm magazine, the 51-year-old carped about how his pivotal role in harmonising relations between the two sides of the divide had been overlooked. "I find it a bit sad that there is no photo of me hanging on the walls in the Berlin Museum at Checkpoint Charlie," he told the magazine.

1. They agreed that Hasselhoff had to be stopped
so they joined forces to end his career.

3. aren't egos something?
Most people: What a phenomenal time to experience and be a part of... wow!

The big ego: No one recognizes the great significance of my contribution towards reunification.

this is just so silly.

9. To be honest:
It was more about some courageous people, protesting. And protesting again. And protesting again, every monday. To be even more honest: it was a minority. Like DU. A small radical minority disturbing peace and order.

I did call one of my relatives in East-Germany, asking her, why she didn't join the protest.... She was working in a bank in East-Germany, then.

Answer from East-Germany: "They might be right, somehow. Not all of them are radicals....
But they didn't bath, and most of them are to lazy to work. And then, there's the police..."

East-German DU didn't stop the protest.
The wall was about to fall.

I did escape to the USA for about half a year.

Helmut Kohl, David Hasselhoff, Milka-Chocolate and Jacobs-Coffee decided to better not let these DUers finish the job. At least, it was just about chocolate, a VW and voting for the republicans or the democrats. The rest of the time, eat chocolate, drink Jakobs-Coffee and stay at home on mondays.

Fighting for freedom on the television,
Dirk
