Finally -- a cogent critique of superbowl halftime
By RUSSELL SMITH
From Thursday's Globe and Mail

The least interesting thing about the Super Bowl entertainment was Janet Jackson's half-exposed breast. I watched it with a bunch of friends and we all saw it and no one commented.

We were too stunned by the weirdness of the rest of the spectacle. In the crazy quilt of visual references in this show, there were: a uniformed marching band, dancing hip-hop style, a gothy SM outfit, and a lot of jazz dancers wearing white overalls with braces and bowler hats that were inspired by Kubrick's 1971 film A Clockwork Orange.

<snip>

This article looks at the unconscious signals sent by the halftime production of the superbowl this year, and what the whole bizarre scene might suggest about current American culture.

A little scary.

1. And the flag poncho.
Don't forget the flag poncho.

It was a bizarre thing. I got housework done during halftime. There was noone I wanted to see performing, and the commercials I will be able to see a gazillion times later.

2. I am still offended by the flag poncho. What were they thinking?
If someone against the war had worn that the media would have crucified him. The entire circus was deplorable.

3. Maybe it's time to bring back the Marching Band
though I'm not sure which marching band you'd have for a professional event.

4. Maybe it's time for this country
Maybe it's time for this country to pull its collective cultural head out of its mass-media ass before we get a nasty wake-up call.

6. dry hump
the two minutes of dirty butt-grinding that preceded the boob was much more provocative, yet passed the "scrutiny" of all the execs who are now complaining about defiling the wholesome institution of the NFL.
