CBS: Should we invite Colbert to the Debates?
All this coverage – and the fact that the umpteenth debate is scheduled for tomorrow night – got me thinking. Colbert’s supporters are real. His poll numbers are real, and are ahead of many second tier candidates.

So the question is: At what point do the news networks invite him to participate in these debates?

3. I say now.
At least we would KNOW when he is acting.

It would certainly serve to liven up and bring some actual discourse to these "debates".

7. he would be in character, and he would eviscerate anyone trying to
toe the line too much. It would be great fun.

5. Well, it would be entertaining.
Last I saw, he was running as both but where the SC Dems wanted like a $50 fee, the SC (R)s wanted $25,000 or something.

Did he ever announce which party he is running in SC for?

9. Tell you a story about my high school election.
In my senior year of high school, there were a bunch of candidates and one non-candidate. Someone had actually gotten support for "no president" for the presidency. It was intended to be a "no confidence" vote and a demand to dissolve the student government, and to create something more meaningful.

They had all the candidates appear on the stage and give their stock speeches, as full of bullshit as any political speech anywhere. Then, to represent the "no president," a wild-haired radical kid I had never seen before got up there. He ticked off points from the other candidate's speeches, and easily poked holes in them. He said that students needed genuine representation, not a little bunch of pretend politicians. He got the loudest applause.

So, they voted. And "no president" won. I graduated with the pride that one of the most stupid and pretentious organizations in school had been dissolved.

I returned the next year to take pictures at my younger brother's graduation. A couple of kids stood up and tried to explain that they had attempted to put together a new student government, and conceded failure. The principal (like all educators, a pompous asshole when on the mike) painfully said that things weren't that bad. But I cheeered the two "failed" kids. The fraud had not been restored.

This is what I see Colbert's candidacy as representing. A chance for this brilliant guy, who stood next to Bush and eviscerated him before the nation, to mock the idiocy of EVERY candidate, Democrat or Republican, and point out that for all their posing, they don't represent the people of America. That the electoral college and the nominating process is a kluge and a fraud. In other words, the boot in the groin that America needs to think seriously about this country and its future.

10. What a great story!
When I graduated high school, my principal was also retiring, and it was a very wild year. He actually changed places with a student for a week (day?) and was responsible for starting a food fight in the cafeteria! (I was a register worker in our snack shop on the side/outside, so I missed all the fun).

Before then, I knew him to be honest and even handed. His replacement, while not him, was also a capable principal. I'm sorry your's and so many others ARE little hitlers, but I'm also glad to hear the student government fell. I hope it's been rebuilt, however because the administration NEEDS the input of students, even little dictators, because it tends to bring a fresher perspective to things, and keep the school up to date, as much as is possible anyway.

So, while I'm glad the student government got shaken up(as it should be every few years) I hope it eventually reformed, because as students, that foot in the door is needed, to keep things from getting too crazy!

BACK ON TOPIC... GO COLBERT! on the up side, this year, even if Stephen ISN'T allowed to join in the reindeer games, we still have Dennis Kucinich! GO DK!!!!!
