Bush struggles to stay relevant in climate debate

By Caren Bohan

WASHINGTON, Sept 30 (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush, hosting major polluting nations last week, sought to convince skeptics that he wants to help shape the next global deal on climate change, despite his long history of shunning such efforts.

But with only 15 months left in office, his chances of becoming a major player in the debate over climate change are diminishing quickly, analysts and diplomats said.

They added that his resistance to the kind of mandatory emissions limits sought by many allies in Europe and Japan may further weaken his influence as negotiations intensify over a successor treaty to the Kyoto Protocol. That treaty, which Bush rejected, expires in 2012.

Bush told a gathering of envoys from the 17 biggest emitters of greenhouse gases that he took global warming seriously and that the United States would do its part to combat it................

But Bush found himself at odds with many of the invited delegates as he tried to rally support for voluntary measures and declined to embrace the binding targets many believe are essential to tackling global warming.

3. The Criminal Bush shouldn't be relevant in any talks...
He should be, behind bars or hung, for treason and war crimes.

5. "stay" relevant? Now that's a real stretch ....

"he wants to help shape the next global deal on climate change" -- oh, sure you do, Georgie. I thought I saw some things flying by overhead, but they were only some Canada geese, not pigs with wings.

Oh, and Georgie -- if you still think it's a "debate", you haven't been paying attention.

6. Interesting that he is only NOW realizing he won't be prez for life. Since he doesn't have a single
original thought in his head, he's looking for what he can steal and call his own.

I think he's always secretly wished he was Al Gore. :-)

7. I believe you're onto something there ... here's what he once said about Gore

"Can you imagine how much it hurt to know that Dad’s idea of the perfect son was . . . Al Gore?"

I believe there was a grain of truth behind this supposed joke. "Dubya" has always had problems relating to his father, and if GHWB even once spoke of Gore favorably, this might have been enough to mark him as a rival and an enemy, in Georgie's eyes. He's even made comments about the fact that Bill Clinton hangs around with his dad -- they seem to be having a good time together, and Georgie has got to be wondering if they gossip about him behind his back. He is rather insecure (or he wouldn't feel the need to put people, especially subordinates, down so much).
