Ron Paul supporters: Do your homework
Letter: Ron Paul supporters: do your homework
Kyle Raccio
Issue date: 9/21/07 Section: Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:

The other day, I was hurrying home from class when a number of Republican supporters of Ron Paul for President tried to hand me a flyer, talking about how Ron was the No. 1 candidate for freedom.

I politely told them I am a Democrat and I do not support Ron Paul's candidacy. When asked why, I informed them I would not support someone that has a vehemently conservative record opposing gay rights.

2. Still better than hillary.
Think about it. Under Ron Paul the war would end and the state of gay rights would not change.
Under Hillary, the war would continue and the state of gay rights would not change.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about gay rights. But in the highly unlikely event that it was Paul v. Hillary...

3. So is eliminating the Dept. of Education
on the top of your agenda? If so, Paul is your candidate. If not, Hillary is. I'm a Democrat.

is a lot harder than ending a war. How many lives would be saved? I'm a democrat too, I'll vote for who wants the war over. That's not hillary.

Seriously, the dude's never going to be nominated anyway.

4. So, you want to eliminate social programs?
Ron Paul - and Libertarians, in general - want government to serve two roles: provide national defense and protect business interests.

So, if you like the Star Wars missile defense system (which Paul strongly supports) and hate OSHA, environmental controls, and child labor laws, Ron Paul's your guy!

6. Please show me where
it is written that Ron Paul wants osha and child labor gone. Do you really think he would be successful trying that?

7. It's in the Libertarian Party platform.

Search for "child labor".

"We oppose laws infringing on children's rights to work or learn, such as child labor laws and compulsory education laws."

As for OSHA, Libertarians want to remove ALL restrictions on business. They believe that businesses without controls would police themselves.

We tried that once. It was called the Robber Baron era.

There are plenty of critiques of the Libertarian Party online. I'd suggest checking some of them out before you get too enamored with Mr. Paul.

Edit: the author of the source I provide is a Libertarian. I don't agree with his assessments. It was just the first site I found when I Googled for the LP platform.

I would be worried. We both know he has no chance so there's really no point in arguing over it.

10. There's nothing to argue.
Ron Paul is a Libertarian. If you want to know how he stands on the issues, do some research on the LP. What you find might surprise you.

9. Define Success
It would just be more of the Bush administration, only worse. If Paul were pres, he would simply not sign any budget with funding for programs he dislikes. Do you think he'd give a hoot if it shut down the government?

He also supports a constitutional amendment for school prayer.

If all you care about is Iraq, I guess Ron Paul or Dennis Kucinich is your candidate. If you really want to get out of Iraq so badly you'd elect a guy who would return America to the late 19th century, I guess you would like Paul better than most of our Democratic candidates.

11. Supporting Ron Paul just because he's anti-war is like supporting
Pat Buchanan just because he's against NAFTA.

They're both "stopped clocks that are right twice a day."
