Skyrocketing Milk Prices Hit Families
Skyrocketing Milk Prices Hit Families Just In Time For School

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/08/09/milk.prices/index.html
Record-high milk prices are stinging Americans at the dairy case, just as millions of thirsty school children are returning to classes.

The average retail price of a gallon of whole milk has never been higher -- $3.80 a gallon -- according to July Department of Agriculture statistics. Experts blame the price spike -- up 51 cents since February -- on milk shortages in Europe and Australia.

Prices are approaching $5 a gallon in Georgia, where on a sweltering summer day last week, about 100 children and parents toured Mark Cagle's dairy farm north of Atlanta.

Tim and Beth Byington wrangled their two preschool children around the farm, surrounded by mooing Holsteins.

1. Kids over eight don't really need milk
Let 'em drink soymilk. Some of it is fortified with calcium and vitamin D.

There is no earthly reason it has to come from an udder.

3. exactly - humans have NO NEED for cow milk OR the welfare dairy industry
now that the welfare dairy farmers are raking in the big bucks thanks to welfare price subsidies, it is time to end all price supports for cow's milk products.

4. Numerous factors involved
1. Cost of grain (thanks to drought)
2. Increased demand from China and India is claimed
3. More and more cats keep hijacking milk trucks?
4. The cows have gone on strike and demand more money for folks to tinker with their udders
5. The milk fairy was murdered by the Grinch

I recall, barely 5 months ago, it was $2.60/gallon. But, apart from instant pudding, I don't drink milk. Broccoli and other choice vegetables contain sufficient calcium for human need.

5. In Orlando FL the chain supermarkets charge $4.19 to $4.29 a gallon for milk
...although milk can be purchased as lost leaders in chain pharmacy stores like Walgreens for $0.50 less per gallon.
