Coming of Age in Bush’s America
Coming of Age in Bush’s America

Imagine being on the brink of adolescence in the year 2000, - only minimally aware of the world around you, and really not into the foibles of politics or politicians. Life was what it was, and you took it pretty much for granted. In fact, for you and other young teens in 2000; things seemed pretty good and getting better, because you were growing up in the richest and most powerful nation in the whole damn world.

It wasn’t a perfect place, for sure, but it had potential. There were wrongs to be righted, but there was real hope that things would only get better as the years went on. All in all, in the year 2000, being a kid in America was a good thing to be.

Now imagine that it is seven years later and you have just grown into adulthood, and you gradually realize that in a frighteningly short a time your entire world has become unraveled. In just seven years, everything good that once was there is gone, and your country has come apart at the seams before your very eyes.

Really think about these last seven years and recoil at what it actually means to have come of age in Bush’s America,

To assist your reality check, here’s a short list the mind-boggling transformations that have become standard operating procedure in the good old USA.....

3. Coming of age! It's not so easy for someone who was 53 when the Bushistas took over.
Seeing the society, it its hard-won gains, of the past five-plus decades go down the toilet has been very painful.

7. I think it's worse for our generation, dtd
We livd through the 2nd half of the greatest century any civilization ever had, and have now watched it be torn to shreds by a band of malignant terrorists.

I pity my grandkids who will never know the greatness of America.

13. Some do TOJ,
I work with young adults, ages 15-20yrs. Everyone of them are so very aware, and they are angry. One of them (who is Fortunately) my niece, went through battle in her senior year, about not participating in "The pledge of allegiance", she refused to say "Under God".She lived in a very small town in rural Nevada, she won her case!!
Even my own daughter,10, is Very much aware, her fathers passion is American History, and her favorite debate is learning from our past.
I am truly humbled by these, and many more kids, and their incredible amount of hope they have, even knowing that they have alot of work to do cleaning up the mess that will be left behind.

6. I came into my political awareness during the Nixon admin...
...although I was probably quite a bit younger than your typical political junkie (born 1965, I was 7 when Nixon won re-election in '72), I still remember how I felt when Carter was elected - how REFRESHING it was that we would have a President we could be proud of. Then came the 1980's...:(

I feel genuinely sad for today's youth...

8. I was a freshman in college when Poppy was elected
It feels very much the same. I think I am the liberal I am today because I grew up in Reagan and Poppy's America.

I will never forget the day Clinton was elected. It was euphoric!

11. We can thank Reagan for this one
"A President of the United States need not speak honestly, coherently or intelligibly when not reading from a prepared text."

12. yes
Sorry to say but this has NOT happened overnight. The Reagan era set the path that we are on - this was in the 1980s.

The corporate fascist sellout is now nearly complete - except for one thing. The fire sale to end all fire sales when the economy finally collapses (due to heavy borrowing, inflated housing etc). The rich will then buy up the spoils at pennies on the dollar.
