Time for President to Come Clean on Tillman (by Jon Soltz for HuffPost)

Time for President to Come Clean on Tillman
Posted July 28, 2007 | 11:09 AM (EST)

The worst way you can further exacerbate the pain survivors of a fallen soldier feel, is to keep them wondering why and how their loved one died. Now past three years since former NFL star Pat Tillman died in Afghanistan, his mother, Mary Tillman, and her family do not have answers. Unfortunately, documents meant to put the investigation into his death to rest are only bringing up more painful questions, rather than calming them. What's worse is that the case could start to have serious repercussions with internal confidence in the Armed Forces.

Yesterday, the Associated Press reported that among the files on the case that the news agency obtained were details of Army medical examiners being unable to convince the military to look into whether Tillman was intentionally killed. According to the documents, the wounds they found were inconsistent with the government's original official story that Tillman was cut down by Afghan fighters and looked more like he was killed by an American M-16 just a mere 10 yards away.

After an investigation, the government changed the story -- that Tillman was a victim of friendly fire, an honest mistake, because he was mistaken for the enemy. The recent revelations now cast this conclusion into serious doubt. You don't mistake someone from 10 yards away. But, was it murder or negligence? Was this a deliberate homicide?

President Bush is not helping at all. With these new details, and his decision to invoke executive privilege in the Tillman investigation, the president is certainly sending the signal that he has something to hide.

It is inevitable, then, that unless the president comes clean, rumors about Tillman's death will take hold. By stonewalling, there is no way to stop people from wondering, "Was the man the White House used to promote the war ordered to be killed because he was becoming increasingly critical of the war in Iraq?" It was well known that Tillman was critical of the decision to go to war, and had often read and quoted Noam Chomsky. I don't personally believe such a conspiracy to be the case, but until the president comes clean, rumors like that will continue to grow. Every officer knows that if a soldier in their command is killed they must write the family and tell them the truth, for exactly that reason. Why can't the man who sent Pat Tillman to war, and used his death for political gain, have the courage to tell a family what happened to their son? ......(more)

2. Right -- It's Way Past Time for Bush to "Come Clean" About Everything
But it won't happen. If there ever is an impeachment proceeding (and I'm certainly not holding my breath) he will indignantly testify as to his own blamelessness and high motives, and will be seen by many as persuasive because he will so fervently believe in his own bullshit. People can investigate all the various allegations till the cows come home and he will never, NEVER admit to error, certainly not wrongdoing. People on the Right believe that the word "Right" as applied to them means Right in the sense of correct and true, particularly morally correct and true. If they scheme and plot to steal elections, punish critics, wage stupid wars under false pretenses, they believe that they're only doing what they have to do because they're so "Right" that anyone who disagrees with them or tries in any way, however slight, to thwart them is, to them, dangerously Wrong.

They won't surrender power in January of 2009. If a Democrat is there taking the oath, this will be someone who, secretly, is on their team. Otherwise they'll overthrow the election on some dumb crooked pretext, and believe wholeheartedly that they're "Right" to do so.

3. This report on Tillman was in a local newspaper
(does that help moderator?) As reported in The Morning News Tribune 7/27/07. Martha Mendoza/Associated Press-medical examiners were suspicious about the closeness of the three bullets in Pat Tillman's head and asked authorities to investigate which occurred on after the Army got through with their investigations (our tax dollars at work. "The medical evidence did not match up with the senario described" accordng to the physician after examining Tillman's body.(I wonder if the good doctor is safe, my persona opinion after the "sucicide" of the British scientist that kept saying Iraq had no WMD,s. Interesting this scientist committed "sucicide" after telling a colleague that he would meet him next week in Iraq. Anyone familiar with sucicides knows this is not sucicidal behavior). Army attorneys sent each other congratuary e-mails that they were keeping the investigation on hold until the Army investigated. The 3 Star General who kept the truth from the Tillman family had 70 laspses of memory (something afflicking this administration on other areas). There was no evidence of enemy fire at the location. No one else was hit nor any equipment. If our forces thought Tillman and O'neal were enemy I doubt O'neal would be alive today. Yet I suspect if Tillman was killed by our government through troops or blackwater if I were O'neal I'd lie to stay alive. The doctor that was suspicious of the 3 bullet wound took the unusal step of contacting the Army's Human Resources Dept but was rebuffed because higher authority told the higher authority, no. O'neal states that as he was at Tillman's side, Tillman was waving his arms and shouting "cease fire". But the latest documents give a difference story from a chaplain who debreifed the unit. Oh, Joe Six Pac, you are paying taxes to have this crap pulled on you...when are you going to get fed up?

5. He CAN'T come clean
Bush has painted himself into a corner here. As long as he refuses to give up details on the Tillman case, the more the impression takes hold that the admin had Tillman killed. However, Bush has also spent a lot of time and support erecting the edifice of being above the law. The second a hole is put in that, the whole thing collapses like a house of cards.

Should be fun to watch.
