Al-Qaeda is Stronger Everywhere Except in George Bush's Mind ...The Daily Star, Lebanon
"His own party stalwarts have begun to break with his make-believe worldview, noting correctly that terrorism seems to be increasing the longer the U.S. oversees a military occupation in Iraq."There is something surreal or simply politically askew, about the American president's insistence that progress is being made in the "global war on terror," even as all other tangible evidence suggests the reverse.
George W. Bush milked the political capital and mass emotional anger that emanated from the 9/11 tragedy for nearly five years, but his fantasy world of waging cosmic war on behalf of divine patrons for all humankind has quickly unraveled in recent months. All indications of public and Republican support for his policies are in decline, as they have been for years throughout the world.
The most damning evidence comes from his own intelligence community, in the form of a report leaked last week that said al-Qaeda's operating capabilities are at their strongest levels since the attacks of September 11, 2001 . At the same time, fighters motivated by al-Qaeda's criminal ideology and those of its ilk continue to multiply, primed by the powerful incentive that Bush has given them by invading and occupying Iraq. Terrorist groups linked to or inspired by al-Qaeda have made Iraq and the Pakistan-Afghan frontier area a radicalization hub-and-spoke operation, drawing in militants from around the world and sending them out again into that same world to attack it at will. Not coincidentally, the most dynamic engines of growth in the terror industry are the two places that the United States has launched wars, and where it continues to lead contingents of foreign troops.
The report, compiled by the National Counterterrorism Center, indicates that despite a worldwide campaign since 2001 to dismantle it, al-Qaeda has rebuilt its global network. It's not surprising, therefore, that in the past week alone - pick a week, any week you like - we have had al-Qaeda-like terrorists fighting the Lebanese Army in Lebanon, arrested in Morocco and Egypt, blowing up people in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan, detained and indicted in Australia and the U.K., and singled out in the American report as likely to attack Europe and the United States. And that's only what has been released to the public - and only in a single week. We still don't know what is happening behind the scenes.
