Stepping up to the challenge
by Ed Kociela | May 28 2007

That creepy, shadowy Paul Wolfowitz is blaming the media for his demise at the World Bank.

Good! It means we're doing our jobs.

Now, if only enough of us could see the light on a few other topics.

Like:

* It's time to press forward with criminal charges on Dick Cheney. He weaseled out a multi-million dollar retirement from Halliburton, who was, by coincidence, awarded un-bid contracts for Iraq, among other self-serving actions that have lined his pockets.

* While they're at it, it's time to bring to light the actions of Karl Rove, the manipulative socio-path who is the political brains behind George Bush. Does anybody doubt his hand is behind the politics of the firing of U.S. Attorneys? You don't have to scratch too deep on this one.

* And, why isn't there more being made of the war crimes and seizure of power by Bush? This man entered into an aggressive act on an innocent country illegally; is responsible for more than 600,000 deaths -- civilian and military alike -- in Iraq; seems on the precipice of further military action in Iran; has neglected the American people by leaving New Orleans no better than a city in a Third World country; has approved illegal wiretaps, revoked civil liberties and created a reeling economy. The latest stats show unemployment figures a rising a bit, but the real news is that the newest jobs come from the service industries, not manufacturing, which puts a knife through this country's economy.

* Hold the Democrats accountable for forgetting that they campaigned on ending the Iraq War, for pledging to improve health care in this country and abandoning the mandate handed them.

* Hold ourselves accountable for listening to money instead of heart. Perfect example? The tiering of the crop of presidential candidates. The media has anointed Rudy on one side and Clinton-Obama on the other. Those who propose true change -- like Republican Ron Paul and Democrat Dennis Kucinich -- are already being called longshots, also-rans. They have no chance, according to the media. The media divas, no matter how ridiculous they speak, are pushed to the front because they make good sound bites. But, the issues? They are buried. Personally, Paul and Kucinich should tell their respective parties to shove it and form a populist movement that could find strength in the masses who have lost all faith in the system. While both claim allegiance to their respective parties, neither is receiving the support they need because neither has a $100 million war chest. They stick by their parties, which have become dysfunctional.

Perhaps this is where progressive America should show its muscle. Perhaps this is where we should place our energies. Perhaps this is what I've been blathering on and on about for so long in this little space -- a true coalition of the willing that has no place else to turn.
