Apple Patch Batch Fixes 17 Mac OS X Vulnerabilities
http://blogs.zdnet.com:80/security/?p=238

Apple has shipped a Mac OS X update with patches for a total of 17 potentially serious security vulnerabilities.

The latest mega update is the fifth from Apple this year and brings the patch total for 2007 up to 109.

With Security Update 2007-005, Apple is fixing a host of denial-of-service and arbitrary code execution issues affecting several built-in Mac OS X components.

2. Well everytime I turn on my Windows XP machine it has to do and update
at the very least Apple's are much fewer and far between .

So I will continue to mainly use the Mac.

That's a good thing, I would think.

6. It can be spun any way you want it to...
However, there are tens of thousands of hackers going after bugs in Windows, and very few doing the same thing to OS X.

Using your logic, the OS X guys must be geniuses at finding bugs :)

To state something that I (and many others) have stated many times... the ONLY reason there are no viruses, trojans, or exploits for OS X is because nobody is targeting them. The user base is so small that it's no fun going after them when there's a giant userbase to go after with Windows PC's.

It took Apple months to fix some of the Vulnerabilities that were posted on ... The Month of Apple Bugs project.

10. Well no one is trying to
exploit those vulnerabilities, so Apple has time to make sure the patch works, even though no one is attacking them!

If your OS works for you and you're having fun with it, WHO GIVES A FUCK!

13. Linux doesn't have many security flaws in the first place
If you want a truly secure OS, run a Linux distro.

Oh, wait...that involves actually thinking. Sorry, my bad.

18. Are you kidding me??
look at the changelogs for any core linux app. tons of patches for possible exploits, many that would allow root access to be gained.

9. the reason macs are so "secure"
Edited on Fri May-25-07 03:26 AM by dsa
is that virus-makers don't bother trying to create viruses for computers hardly anyone uses.

linux is supposed to be so much better than windows too, but my linux machine has been infected by two viruses this month. linux has become popular enough that people are starting to exploit its vulnerabilities just like windows. i'm having to download linux patches even more often than windows updates, and linux anti-virus software seems to be utterly worthless.

Nobody cares to target an O/S that only has 2.6 percent of the worldwide market.

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/04/30/apples_mac_share_inches_upwards_during_first_quarter.html
For the three-month period ending March, the Mac maker registered a 2.6 percent global share, up from 2.5 percent during the December quarter and from 2.1 percent during the year-ago quarter.

14. What browser are you using?
That makes a big difference, too. I use Opera with Linux, and I've never had a problem in years. I also use Opera with Windows, and have never gotten a virus.

It also helps if you always use web-based e-mail for security. Any time you download e-mail to your computer--Windows, Linux, or Mac--you're asking for trouble. ;)

I think that Opera Is a much better browser than Firefox, but that's just my opinion.

12. Better safe than sorry
I've had my MacBook for just 6 months now, and an occasional update beats the heck out of the weekly security sweeps I have to endure with my Windows XP machine. Count me on the Apple side.
