Greenberg Traurig Rebuilds Its Lucrative Lobbying Practice After Abramoff

May 4, 2007

Greenberg Traurig has made progress in rebuilding its lobbying practice in the wake of the congressional corruption scandal centered on its former Washington, D.C., superlobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Matthew B. Gorson, Greenberg's national operating shareholder in Miami, said that while the firm's Washington lobbying practice has made some recent gains, the firm has turned to state and local lobbying around the country to bolster lobbying revenue. State government lobbying in California has particularly boosted receipts.

From 2005 to 2006, Greenberg's lobbying revenue grew by nearly 59 percent, according to Influence 50, a national ranking of lobby shops compiled by the Legal Times in Washington, an affiliate of the Daily Business Review. That placed Greenberg among the leaders in revenue gain.

Washington, D.C.-based Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld topped this year's Influence 50 with $76.9 million in 2006 lobbying revenue. Hogan & Hartson, which has a Miami office, placed third at $65.7 million. Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis, which also has a Miami outpost, was fifth at $37.3 million.

Greenberg's lobbying revenue is still below 2003, when Abramoff -- who had close ties to Republican congressional leaders such as then-House Majority Leader Tom DeLay -- was working for the firm. That year, Greenberg took in $25.5 million in federal lobbying revenue, and more than $35 million in total lobbying revenue nationwide.
